I recently purchased my first layering stamp set, a sea turtle from Hero Arts, and I'm not happy with the way it came out using my Distress inks. The ink itself worked great, but I feel like an ombré set with colors that are closer together in range would be better.
What do you use or recommend? Do you buy ink to go with every stamp set? 'Fess up, stampers, give me the low down.
I can see an entirely new palette of inks in my future. Maybe I need to stay away from layered stamps altogether!

IMO Distress Inks do not stamp well. For regular dye ink stamping, I use SSS, MFT and LF inks. I don't have a lot of colors and make do with what i have. Sometimes I use the same color for all layers. The areas that are double (or triple) stamped will be darker, making the illusion of more colors.

That's a good tip about layering with the same color, GiantsFan. I'll give it a try.

I was thinking about the issue of different inks, too, but I had noticed that each stamp layer got darker.
The challenge is that sometimes you want a slightly different color, not just a darker layer.
I think using an ombré pad might be challenging to get only the ink color you want, at least it would be for me. I tend to use my CTMH ink pads when stamping with photopolymer stamps. When I buy an ink pad, I always buy the re-inker now. If I can find "blank" pads with no color, I might try to make my own variations of color. I'm just not sure if that would be a good possibility or a terrible failure.

I got some of the layering ink cube sets from Altenew, and they work really well together. I have also used Hero Arts and Lawn Fawn, and discovered something...if you let the ink dry between layers (give it a few minutes anyway) it seems to have more contrast.

I bought the layered flamingo from Hero Arts and it came with a 4-cube ink set that was recommended for use with the Flamingo. The inks stamped beautifully and I was really impressed with the colours. If you search the Hero Arts website you can probably find which colours are recommended for the sea turtle. edited to add the link for the colours recommended for the sea turtle: heroarts.com/products/sb161-color-layering-sea-turtle-bundle

Altenew. They're so easy because of the color families.

An Altenew cube set is in my future. I like the Altenew layering stamps. I too like to take the suggestions from the blogs on those layering stamps. I have about five of those Hero Arts sets and I like the colors they suggest, especially in the goldfish and koi sets. I like Hero Arts inks a lot but you can also get close to the colors they recommend using other dye inks.

I love my Altenew cubes. They are nicely priced and you don't have to overthink about colors.

Just checked them out!!! How come I never heard of them before!! OMG!! It's a relatively new pretty thing (conspiracy) for us all to want and buy. Resistance is futile. LOL.

I will have to take a look at the Altenew ink pads. They sound like the best solution.

Just checked them out!!! How come I never heard of them before!! OMG!! I LOVE my Altenew inks. I have some of the larger pads, but mostly have the mini cubes. They call them "crisp inks" and they truly really sharp. You will love them!

Altenew. They're so easy because of the color families. Yes, and I love their inks. They just feel and cover well. And of course go together!

Another vote for the Altenew crisp dye inks. I buy the cube sets because they're so easy to use.

How do the Altenew inks stamp with cheap clear stamps? I have a pile of MS stamps that are lovely, but they stamp like the cheapest freebies (ink beads up despite my attempts at seasoning them). I hate having to use only pigment inks, because i have *ahem* quite the rainbow of dye inks, and fewer pigment inks. ETA: to address your question, OP, Jennifer McGuire has a post about layering stamps where she lists the colors she uses - they seem to be all or mostly Hero Arts inks.

I only have one set that isn't photopolymer (an Illustrated Faith one that seems to be acrylic) and the Altenew inks work well with it - but the stamps are mostly outline with small areas of detail. The Altenew inks stamp better than Memento Tuxedo black and about the same as the MFT hybrid black ink which is the one I'd use if I was going to colour with copics. The Memento really beads up. See below - set on left stamped with MFT ink, coloured set using Altenew and set at bottom with Memento. SaveSaveSaveSave

anniefb - that is so helpful - thank you! Yes, my MS stamps look like your Memento example when I use CTMH inks (which are supposed to be specially formulated for clear stamps). The Altenew really give good coverage, then!

I've been really happy with the Altenew inks kate - and they work so well for layering stamps. I used to always use the PTI inks but the Altenew are much better IMO.

Great to know about the Altenew. I have all the PTI inks plus a bunch of Hero Arts, and Memento. If they stamp better than the PTI I'm in because I've wanted a replacement for those cubes for a long time. Like that the Altenew has reinkers and that they have those shading sets. PTI is all over the map in terms of coverage so I am ready to move on.
