Really? It's supposed to be present day?
I never would have gotten that.
I've only seen a few scenes. I find it incredibly annoying and not at all funny.

I was confused about this as well. Just curious, is it because their house is a little outdated and Sue dresses ummmm, differently

It's present day, in one episode they got tickets to a Justin Beiber concert and in another episode Brick gets an Ipad.

Just curious, is it because their house is a little outdated and Sue dresses ummmm, differently It's everything - the way their house looks, the way they all dress, all of their hair, the mom's makeup, the daughter's lack of makeup. Just all of it. Nobody looks or dresses like that in this decade.

Wow, really? I've only seen commercials, but I was sure it was the 70s. It reminds me of The Brady Bunch

I The Middle. I think the reason it seems a little outdated is because the family is supposed to be really struggling financially, they don't have the money for all the latest and greatest.

It's how they dress and their house. It's like a weird melding of the 70's & now.

Also out here in the sticks, we are a little behind the trends.

Sue is also very conservative in everything she does. If you watch the show though, Sue is very inspiring because she never gives up, and when things are down, she ALWAYS looks at the bright side.

I started watching The Middle this year.
I am on Season 2 and love it! I think they have a positive spin on raising teenagers & handling the every day stuff like money problems, dating, kids, etc.

It is current day but their house doesn't look like it because it is suppose to look kind of dated (since they don't have the time/money to update it).
I love The Middle - one of my favorite shows. Sue Heck (the daughter) is one of my all time favorite TV characters!

I think I know a few families that are pretty similar in lots of ways. I think it is an extreme, but overall they are a really loving family that is trying to make ends meet and get through life one day at a time. I have had a few Bricks in my classroom over the years.

Another fan here. I like that it is a show that the whole family could watch not saying that my hubby would but I like that it is something I can watch in front of my son and not have to turn it off when he comes in the room. I think it is funny and all the characters really grow on you. I would loose my mind if I had to live in a house with the crazy paint they have going on. I agree Sue and the mom's wardrobe is a bit dated. There have been some really funny episodes and it is one of the few comedies that aren't so crazy stupid that you loose brain cells while you watch.

This is one of my favorite shows. I feel like the writers have spent time in my house. Circa 2014! haha!

I love the show too. I can totally relate to the teenage angst/drama. It's what I live right now.

This is my favorite comedy right now. I don't think Frankie's or Mike's clothes are outdated. She just dresses like a working mom without any extra money or a lot of pizazz. Mike dresses like most men I know. Sue dresses very odd, but that is part of the comedy and helps make her character. I think the house looks like it does because they are not able to update it, except for the fancy washer the hurricane gave them.

The first few seasons my sister talked about how great this show was, and I just couldn't get myself to watch it until 2 years ago. Dang - I missed some great tv.

We love The Middle and Sue Heck is one of my favorite characters on TV right now.
As the mother of a teen DD who isn't interested in makeup unless it is Homecoming or Prom, this made me LOL.
Their house is no worse than some we saw the last time we were househunting and fits their story line of not having much money, expecially for extras.

Yep I've been too poor to have clothes as a line in my budget. And shopping thrifts stores sounds great when you have time and aren't trying to squeeze it in between cooking, cleaning and raising your kids! I have a 15 yr old and a 25 yr old dd and neither of them wear daily makeup

I've always loved watching episodes of The Middle. It feels more 'real!' Some American sitcoms are so unrealistic. I liked Raising Hope for the same reason.
I enjoy Modern Family, but really how many people can afford to live their lives. Holidays to Hawaii, huge houses, constant shopping trips. It feels like they are selling a dream in some ways.

I love this show too. I'm waiting for the new season to start, but I find it quite relevant and current to the economy right now. The characters are great, I love them!
The father works at a quarry and is sometimes laid off, hence, their financial struggles. Sue dresses like that as others have said, because she is conservative but also a little out of touch with what others her age are wearing (there's been a couple of episodes addressing that- and her friend, who is probably gay though Sue doesn't seem to have a clue)
Brick is in a group of kids at school with social skills problems.
I don't wear makeup either. Never really did. I've seen a lot of people who don't.

I must be very "midwestern" because the style of their house and decor doesn't seem a bit out of the ordinary to me. It seems real.

Agree with the majority--it's very clearly present day. House and clothes are outdated because they can't afford to keep up on the latest trends. I think it looks and feels very real for people in that income bracket who are struggling. It reminds me of Roseanne. I actually get kind of sick and tired of everyone on TV living in massive and beautiful homes. Not everyone can live like that; in fact the majority can't.
