so, I am a teacher and work in a school in a very nice neighborhood, but there is no real parking lot. There is a very small cement area that some people park on- it holds about 8 cars- but to get to it you have to drive over a curb and I have a very small car and I don't feel comfortable driving over it every day. The point is that everyone else has to Street park.
I went into school early the past two days to get some stuff done and it has been hotter then hell here, so I have been parking in front of a house with a big tree so that my car stays shaded, rather then in front of the school where it is very sunny. On Monday a woman came into the school and was VERY rude and told me I couldn't park in front of her house. I was completely taken aback. All the houses in the neighborhood have driveways and I was there before 7 am and there was not a car on the street except one house a few down from where I parked. Also, where I parked there was plenty of room for a big car to be behind me. The driveways are only single lane driveways, so even if someone parked in front of me they weren't too far from the house. She was yelling at me and said that she had people coming to do work on her house and they wouldn't be able to park, which was ridiculous. Obviously I wasn't going to argue, so I just went out and pulled my car to the next driveway, about 8 feet ahead of where I was. She watched me and when I got out of the car said, "Good, they never park in the street." I just walked back to school without saying anything, but I was pretty annoyed.
Had she come in and politely explained that someone was coming to do work on her house and could I move I would have been happy to do so. Instead she was belligerent and rude. My classroom has a great view of where I parked and I glanced up several times and there was no one that came by her house all day.
So, today I parked again where I pulled my car to the last time and after I was in school about an hour she called the front office and was yelling at the principal (who answered the phone) about how she had made it clear I was not to park there and I needed to move my car immediately. My principal was completely confused as he had no idea what had happened a few days ago. He told her he would ask me to move, but did tell it was street parking and that I was in my rights to park there and in a few weeks there would be cars lining that street and the street next to it as everyone came back to school.
Apparently he didn't come down right away because about 15 minutes later she called again and was even more irate. After my principal came down and told me he walked me out to my car and waited for me move it because he didn't want this lady coming out to yell out me. I am sure she was thinking he was just watching to be sure I moved, but he told me in the school I absolutely didn't have to move it but if I did he was going to go with me to make sure this woman didn't go crazy.
So, sorry this is so long, but I am right that this is nuts, right? It is street parking and there is no prohibition on parking on this street. Until school starts I will just park in the sun in front of the school, but once school starts that area is off limits due to buses. No one can park there from 8-4, so it is street parking for every school employee. Obviously this woman will have to deal with it, and I hope that she doesn't keep coming to school to make a scene. I won't be parking there again, I will just drive in from a different direction and park across the street from her house, but I know other school employees will end up parking there, as they always have.
Basically, I just want someone to validate me that I am not wrong in wanting to call all my friends and park in front of her house for the next three weeks!

You're right. She's wrong. I'd probably not want my car keyed though. I might bother to call the cops on day 2 of school and give them a heads up about crazy pants.

I would make it my mission to park there everyday, but that's just me.
As long as street parking is legal on that street, she can suck it.

I totally validate you, but I also totally agree with your plan not to park there anymore since she's so darn unhinged about the whole idea of someone parking there. I feel for the principal once there starts being someone from the school parked there everyday!

I'll validate you....What a bitch. Did she just move in or why is this all of a sudden the end of the world to her? At least your principal is on your side with this one, hope he puts her in her place if she continues to call the school and act so inappropriately.

I think the school should provide a proper parking lot for the employees. If I was a homeowner I'd be really unhappy with people parking in front of my house, and complaining to the district until they did something. I agree you should park in front of another house so that you don't get keyed or towed.

I don't know if she is a new resident or not, I haven't been in the neighborhood all summer. If she is new, she is in for a rude awakening when school starts! She is kitty corner to the school and even if teachers don't park there like they have in the past, other people will for pick up and op off and when they go to play on the playground or the soccer and baseball fields.
Thank you for validating me!

You own a home near a school, expect cars parking on the street. It's a given.

There is literally no way to do that, the school building is incredibly old and to build a parking lot they would have to either raze houses or the playground and soccer field. My thought is, you buy a house within in 20 feet of a school you have a lot of things you are going to have to deal with that other people don't.

Although she is wrong, the poor lady is probably fed up with the disrespect of her property during school pickup and drop offs.
You are completely right but I can't help but feel bad for her. I see such horrible treatment of people's yards that live around our Jr. High and Elementary school here. The problem for her will be that if you don't park there someone else will, anyway. I agree that the school district should put in a parking lot, at least for the teachers.
I saw your comments about no way to get a lot after I posted. Sorry you have to deal with that.

That's crazy I can't think of one public K-12 school in my city that offers parking for their staff or students. The private schools offer some, but not enough to cover the student body so those kids also park on the street.

I wondered too if she was new to the area. Crazy lady calling the school could easily scratch up your car. Unless you have a beater car you can drive and park there, I'd stay away. She'll be angry all of the time in a few weeks.

While it would be nice for the school to provide parking, the reality is if they do not have the room to make a parking lot there may not be a lot that can be done. I am guessing that the school is not new and that people have been parking on the street for years? If this is the case the home owner/renter should have known going in that this was the norm. I think I would have had a hard time moving my car or not parking there...in my opinion street parking is open to anyone. But I also would have probably had damage done to my car, so my digging my heels in would have done nothing but cause me aggravation. Skellinton sorry you are having to deal with this, parking issues stink.

Parking is crazy. We have people park in our neighborhood and take public transportation to the local college because parking there is limited and expensive.

I live in Colorado where maybe the housing areas were built in later years with more thought to function. Years ago, there was talk of putting in a public pool in my neighborhood. Yikes! Parking would have been a nightmare since the pool was going to built off of a hill.

I work in a school where there are 4 parking spots for a staff of 45. Everyone else has to park on the streets. The spots between driveways will hold two cars, but most homeowners will park in the middle. This drives me NUTS.
I'm glad your principal backs you up.

This is why we didn't buy next to a school.
If I were the homeowner, my trash cabs would start living out there.

oh boy is she going to be highly upset in a couple of weeks when school starts back!! I'll validate you in that it is a public street and anyone has a right to park in front of her house. But I wouldn't park there again until well after school has started and you have no other choice. By then maybe she will have come to the realization she should have been aware living across the street from a school wasn't a good idea.

When cars park too close to the driveways, it's incredibly difficult to pull out.

Ugh. Welcome to my world. I live in Seattle, and many schools here have limited parking; if you are a visiting parent, you absolutely have no choice but to park on the street, and the school lots don't all hold the entire staff (particularly now that we have a lot of specialized staff that didn't exist 50-100 years ago when most of these schools were built). It's a constant battle of homeowners painting fake and illegal "no parking" lines on the curbs in front of their homes, or calling the principals or even police to report that parents are parking illegally in front of their driveways (it's so weird, but in this age of smartphones, they somehow never manage to snap a picture of any actual offending vehicle, and the car has always "just driven off" without any, say, license plate number if anyone responds to the scene). But the idea of building lots is just funny -- the schools tend to already be completely penned in by houses and to have forests of portables on the playgrounds, so this is how it's going to be.
Anyhow, not to hijack your thread, but that is absolutely ridiculous. It's a street and people can park on it. I hate to reward terrible behavior, but I agree with others that I'd park elsewhere because this is incredibly disruptive.

There is one school here in town that has to put out a notice every year not to park at the entrances of the nearby neighborhoods (most of them HOA neighborhoods and in them in those cases) and not to block mailboxes or their vehicle will be towed. They have a parking lot, but it's not nearly big enough.

In our district we do have parking, but we also have huge schools that by the time you get all the staff plus visitors, people there for meetings, parent volunteers, etc etc etc - the lot often overfills. The schools I work in were built in the 50s and 60s to serve neighborhoods that look really different now than they did then, but there isn't anyplace to put more parking.

The spots between driveways will hold two cars, but most homeowners will park in the middle. This drives me NUTS. Do they have to park that way due to mailbox placement or trash can placement, I wonder. Otherwise, I bet they are afraid to park close to the neighboring driveway for fear someone will clip them backing in or out of the driveway. No matter the reason, it's so frustrating to be anywhere searching for a spot and knowing that far more cars could easily fit if people had parked differently. Save
