We had a neighbor across the street who would park in front of our house and leave the front of his house empty. He did this for several days in a row. He could see he was taking the parking spaces that we use for our two cars. I own the world ugliest 1972 van with several colors of peeling paint and a ton of rust holes and dents. We keep the van for hauling material from the lumber yard etc. It is usually parked up in my driveway where it is not visible. The next time he parked in front of my house I got that ugly van and parked it in front of his house and left it there for almost a week until street sweeping day. I then pulled it back into my driveway and that neighbor never parked in front of my house again. Want to borrow my ugly, rusted, dented van?

The spots between driveways will hold two cars, but most homeowners will park in the middle. This drives me NUTS. Do they have to park that way due to mailbox placement or trash can placement, I wonder. Otherwise, I bet they are afraid to park close to the neighboring driveway for fear someone will clip them backing in or out of the driveway. No matter the reason, it's so frustrating to be anywhere searching for a spot and knowing that far more cars could easily fit if people had parked differently. SaveNope. 25 years of teaching there, and it's not a garbage can or mailbox (mail is delivered to door) issue.

My old neighbor used to tell everyone that they couldn't park in front of his house. He was a bit crazy, but we liked him. He told my son that he was the only one who could park in front of his house. Worked for us.

I'm surprised the principal hasn't involved the school resource officer to address the issue before students arrive on campus. Best wishes...

SaveI am grateful that I live in a country where access to firearms are restricted so that I truly don't have to be concerned about someone shooting at me. This is not really a helpful comment and seems to me it may be directed to start conflict. Let's be honest here. You may not have to worry about gun safety, but I am certain there are other means available that could be used to inflict harm or death in your country. This isn't about guns.

I live by a college. We get people parking in front of our house frequently. What gets me is when they park so part of the driveway is blocked. We are on a narrow street to begin with and even when the road is clear it can be a bit tight. Especially so when there is snow.
Anyway...we got fed up when yet again someone parked blocking half our driveway. Absolutely no way to get out of the driveway. We called the city and a parking guy happened to be one street over. He showed up and talked to the vehicle owner. Get this. They can't do anything unless the driveway is 100% blocked. Even if they only leave 1 foot open, they cannot be towed. That is absolutely ridiculous.

I think the school should provide a proper parking lot for the employees. If I was a homeowner I'd be really unhappy with people parking in front of my house, and complaining to the district until they did something. I agree you should park in front of another house so that you don't get keyed or towed. unless the person owns the street in front of their house, this is ridiculous. You live across from a school. People parked in front if your house is going to happer.

In the neighborhood surrounding our high school, homeowners are issued special hang tags. Any vehicle parked on the street without a tag is towed. People that don't need them and don't mind sell their tags to students and teachers for around $500/year. Maybe this homeowner could get her HOA to organize something similar.

The students also park mainly on the street That happened with a high school around here, only the school assigned large enough lots for the staff and cut back on student parking. So the kids started parking on the streets. Only the town then put up no parking signs around the school, so then the school held a lottery for assigned student spots and any kids not picked had to take a bus or walk. Save

I agree you should park in front of another house so that you don't get keyed or towed. There is literally no way to do that, the school building is incredibly old and to build a parking lot they would have to either raze houses or the playground and soccer field. My thought is, you buy a house within in 20 feet of a school you have a lot of things you are going to have to deal with that other people don't. My guess is that the school was there long before she was (and maybe even long before her house was), so she needs to just pull up her big girl pants and deal. But having said that, people can get completely unhinged over stuff like this and I wouldn't want my car keyed, tires flattened or my paint job egged either. I think I would put in a call to the non-emergency police number, tell them the situation and ask them if there is some way to let crazy lady know that the street parking is open to anyone and she needs to chill the heck out.

Thanks everyone!
It is an elementary school, and there truly is no way to make a parking lot. I can't I imagine the horror it would be if here were students trying to park as well. There are a lot of schools in our area that don't have parking lots, many buildings are close to 100 years old and smack dab in neighborhoods. I know it must suck for the homeowners, but they have to consider that when they buy. Personally the noise of an elementary school playground would keep me from buying a house too close to a school if I was home during the day.
I am assuming this lady is new to the neighborhood, I also think once school starts the principal will have to deal with her again. For now, I am not going to park there, but I do think once all the teachers get back in a week or two her house will be parked in front of. I wonder what she will do then? Even if she scares the teachers off, she won't have time to scare away all the parents who will be overjoyed to find a spot so close to the school open!
Again, thanks for all the validation. It does feel good to vent.

People parked in front if your house is going to happer. Exactly. My previous house was across the street from a church. I expected people to park on the street on Sundays, and for the first several years, it was fine. We may have had to park a few houses down on Sundays, if we went out, but that was no big deal. In recent years, it got much busier on that street, after the church expanded and got rid of some of their parking. More people parked on the street. A lot more. It got to the point that if you lived on that street, you didn't move the car you street parked until after the last church service was over. If my elderly parents were coming over, we'd get up early and move our other vehicle from our driveway to the street, so they didn't have to walk a block to our house when they arrived during the church service. But we never, EVER would have told someone they couldn't park there. We moved earlier this year. One of the criteria was that the new house not be within a few blocks of a church or a school.

She must own the street.
unfortunately, the school probably wants to keep the peace in the neighborhood so you better park elsewhere. As a parent, i got an irate note on my car telling me not to park in front of a guys house and I went up to his door rang the bell, and told him to shove it. But I dont recommend that either.
keep in mind she sounds unhinged enough to either have your car towed or trash it in some way. Best to steer clear.

If there's no witness, you can't hold her responsible, no matter how positive you are that she's guilty. Anyway, I totally validate you, Skellinton . Unless there's limited/permit-only parking on the street, it is open to the public. She can bite me (as long as she doesn't actually have access to my car).

Ah, the Parking Wars. lol OP said the school is old. Which means that most likely anyone who bought a house in that neighborhood did so after the school was built, so they knew it was there. If they didn't know then that's their fault...who buys a house and doesn't look at where it's located? Also no one owns the street, so the parking spot in front of your house is not yours to control. However this woman sounds crazy and OP I'd do what you did and decide to park somewhere else for now because you never know. I've never understood the whole "don't park in front of my house" mentality, but maybe that's because I've always lived in urban areas? I mean, of course it's convenient to park in front of your own house if you don't have a driveway or can't fit your vehicles into the driveway, but it's not a right. The problem with a lot of school parking lots is often what someone said in this thread....the parking lot was built back when the school was and now it's hemmed in by playground and houses around it. But, the school has grown over the years, maybe added onto, so there are more teachers and more staff and more specialized personnel (social workers, special ed people, resource people, etc.). The school has outgrown the parking lot. The school where I do most of my subbing (which was my kids' elementary school) has a long narrow lot with a fence on one side (a parking lot belonging to a condo is on the other side of the fence). A lot of teachers don't like parking there because it's difficult to get in and out sometimes. It always fills up anyway so the leftovers spill out into the neighborhood. And when there are special events at the school -- plays, music things, etc. -- parents have to park all over the neighborhood. It's just something we deal with because like I said, who didn't know there was a school there when they bought their house?

What a crazy woman!
The street is there for everyone so unless she's bought that piece of road she has no right to tell anyone who can and who can't park there.
I get it most days/evenings as I live near a church with varying weekly activities there. Provided they don't block my drive ( some do at times then I go out and ask them to move up a little just to clear the drive) I just ignore it otherwise.

I would make it my mission to park there everyday, but that's just me. As long as street parking is legal on that street, she can suck it. Yep. If she hadn't said a word, or even asked nicely, I would rotate my parking spots along the street. As it is, the spot in front of her house would be my car's new home.

Consider yourself validated by me. I'm one who doesn't like people parking in front of my house, and I've been known to ask neighbors to move their cars. But I live in a subdivision and no where near a school or any place that would necessitate street parking. If the street where your school is located allows street parking then I don't see where she has any leg to stand on and you had every right to park there. Sorry you're having to deal with that.

there is a neighbourhood near us called "the beach". it is close to lake ontario, there are cute shops and restaurants, a boardwalk, beach area, volleyball courts, fire pits, etc, etc.
it is quite an expensive neighbourhood to live in and well known for it's NIMBY attitude about almost everything.
so when DD was little, i drove over, parked on a residential street and went to my trunk to pull out my stroller. i was taking DD for a walk on the boardwalk and to the park. this woman is standing outside her house, staring at me and muttering. so i paused, looked for the sign and it said parking prohibited from 11pm to 7am, permit parking only overnight. which means.... i can park there. so she is still walking back and forth, shooting me the stink eye and muttering.
finally i asked her, "is everything okay? it looks like i am able to park here??" and she replies "well you CAN, but i would prefer you DON'T!!!". i replied "oh, i see" and proceeded to strap DD in the stroller and walk away.
WTF? you chose to live in a neighbourhood with jazz-fest and easter parades and a lively tourist scene.... too freakin' bad lady. i say "park away"!! some people have nothing better to worry about.
