I need suggestions for foods that have high nutrition but go down easy. The problem is the only thing we can get down her is broth that is thin like tea. She can't eat anything that has even a little bit of pulp, because it catches in her throat, and then she throws up. Yesterday's soup was put through the Blendtec, and it still wasn't thin enough. I ended up straining it in a tea bag strainer, and she was able to swallow it and keep it down. If we can't get nutrition down her, she's going to need a feeding tube and maybe end up in the hospital. One friend has ordered a medical grade protein powder to add to tea or broth, but we can use all the suggestions we can get.
Thanks for any help you can give us so we can help her. We are really worried about her and just want to help.

I have no advice, just want to say I am sorry! I'll be watching as my sweet BIL (sister's hubby) is going through treatment for throat cancer. He just had his first chemo .

First, has her dr..given her "Miracle Mouthwash", it helps numb the mouth a little before eating, it contains Lidocaine. You could also try Premier Protein shakes. They have them in several flavors and thin them with almond milk.
Are her sores from chemo or radiation? How many more treatments does she have. How much does she weigh and how much weight has she lost already?

The Magic Mouthwash is often suggested for mouth sores and lots of people say it helps.
My husband has esophageal cancer (EC) and I have found great advice and suggestions on the Facebook pages specifically for that. They are closed groups, so you just request to join and they are pretty quick to get that done. If it's not EC, you might still get good information there or you can search for another specific group on Facebook.
I got Premier Protein for my husband and he drank some of that early in his treatment. He's had chemo, which has helped him be able to eat more things, but will be starting the chemo/radiation combination soon, and we know that can cause more difficulties during and right after the treatment period. Staying hydrated and getting enough calories and protein is super important.
I will say that, depending on the situation, most people on the Facebook pages have said NOT to be afraid of a feeding tube, that it was a lifesaver for many.

I agree with the magic mouthwash suggestion. Very helpful! My mother enjoyed the carnation instant breakfast drinks. She got free Ensure shakes from the dr. but could not stomach them. My brother-in-law had baked custard for many meals, the eggs provided lots of protein!

My mother liked Costco's vanilla flavoured meal replacement drinks. We still have an unopened box of them and I need to figure out how to dispose of them as they have long since expired.

My brother-in-law had baked custard for many meals, the eggs provided lots of protein! The Carnation Instant breakfast and the Ensure are virtually identical in profile, but the Carnation is a lot cheaper, I beleve. And a lot of people say they like the Carnation better; my husband has used those too.

As far as I know, she is just on chemo.
She won't drink or eat anything sweet. Even grapes are too sweet for her,so I suspect the Carnation and Ensure might seem too sweet to her, too, but it is worth a try. She is so thin.
I had thought of bone broth. However, sometimes she won't even drink broth.
I will ask about the mouthwash. Thanks for the info on that.
What she drinks, she wants really hot. I know that can aggravate the sores, but she says she can't stand it if it isn't really hot.
I appreciate all the suggestions. Please keep them coming!
