Howdy. So I am going thru washing machines like nobody’s business. My first, a Maytag Neptune, lasted 5 years. Bought a LG front loader, which I hate, and is having problem after problem….guess what, it’s 5 years old! I don’t have hard water, there’s just DH, DS, and myself. Granted, DH has cancer so I am doing laundry like crazy but seriously shouldn’t they last MORE than 5 frickin years? I have been without a washing machine for a week now. Supposedly will be fixed today (God willing!). But I just have a gut feeling that I’m going to need to replace it soon.
What do you have? Brand? Front Loader? Top Loader? What do you like / not like? I’m starting my research now.
TIA!
Michelle

I have maytags that are 15 years old and they sound loud and clanky (is that a word?) but that is what my DH had in the house. They are working fine. Previously I purchased a front load, Kenmore elite) I did not like the front load at all. I will never buy one again. I am not sure what brand I will get when the time comes but it will be top load without an agitator.

We bought a top load LG washer and stema dryer a few months ago and so far, I really like it. I hated the Bosch frontloaded that we had before, although we had it for 10 years and it was still working when we gave it away. I will never have another front loader washer.

Speed Queen top loading washer and dryer. Very happy with them.
I chose a good old fashioned mechanical top loader with agitator after doing a lot of research, inspired by everyone I know with a front loader complaining about them.

we have a Samsung pair, and i really like them. One feature i LOVE is a delay timer. So, i can put a load in when i leave for work, set it to wash in 8 hours, and the load is done when i get home. And more importantly, those clothes don't sit wet all day long until i can get home and put them in the dryer. Highly recommend that feature!!

I have a 6 year old GE front-load that is OK, but my absolute favorite washing machine was a Fisher & Paykel top-load that we sold with our last house. I regret getting talked into a packaged appliance deal for this house and will definitely by a F&P when I need to replace the GE.

I have a Whirlpool top load washer and electric dryer that DH bought about 15 years ago. They have very limited settings and are not energy efficient but our electric isn't any higher than my neighbors that do have energy efficient appliances. Many times we have considered replacing them, but in the end we realize that since they clean dirty clothes and dry wet clothes, why bother? My parents have some new fancy "smart" energy efficient ones and complain about them constantly and this further validates our decision to keep our old, janky ones.

My OLD (at least 25 years) faithful washer will be replaced by a Speed Queen when it dies. I want another as much like the one I've had all these years, and Speed Queen is similar.

I have an LG high efficiency top loader. I love it 99% of the time. What I don't love is that I can't wash my rubber backed bath mats or my waterproof mattress pads. It's not a super-huge deal now....but it was much more of a PITA when we were in the thick of potty training at night time.

I hate, hate, hate my front loader but 5 years ago, that was all I could find. I'm happy to see that top loaders are making a come back! I'm hesitant to every buy Maytag anything after my last washer. And if this one goes, LG will be dead to me too ;-)Will have to check out Speed Queen. I have never heard of that brand.

Speed Queen traditional top loader. LOVE my washer. I think the dryer is a Kenmore. Obviously not a matched set.

Don't quote me on this but I think that they are phasing out traditional washing machines starting this year. Speed Queen may still be available in a commercial form (maybe they'll do something like that so that consumers can still buy them) but I wouldn't wait too long.

I'm old school - I've got a Kenmore top loader that's 25 yrs old! I love it, does everything I need, and if I weren't so po'd with Sears, I'd replace it with another Kenmore when we have to.

When we were shopping for a washer Sears didn't have much at all in the way of traditional top loaders. None at all in the store.

gale w Well, that's depressing! When the time comes (which I expect will be any day now) I guess we'll be out there searching too and I'll keep Speed Queen in mind. I hate having to buy appliances.

well, I don't have mine here and hooked up yet. I've been washing things in a tub outback at the spigot. one of those old wringer top parts would sure come in handy... we had one of those when I was growing up.

I have a front loading Kenmore that I really like. We have had it for 10 years and it is starting to act up. I would probably replace it with another front loader.

Have a Maytag Centennial HE top loader w/o an agitator. Pretty basic with no computer/digital stuff. Coming up on 2 years old. Got a great deal at Lowe's right before Black Friday sales, they had these already marked down. Does a good job, though it makes really weird noises- which the handbook says are normal!
Had an expensive Kenmore front loader HE which only lasted about 5 years. We are a family of three and I don't do a huge amount of laundry, maybe 4-5 loads a week. Had the local appliance repair guy out to look at it. He's been in the business forever. He shook his head, said the drum was shot and he could try to fix it but it wouldn't hold up. He said that nowadays, most mfgrs. are producing washing machines only built to last 4-5 years.
