is off, but you can still turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic, do you edge out into the intersection to catch the opportunity to turn left?
Or wait behind the 'line' in the intersection where you'd be out of the way if the light turns red?
ETA: Would you honk at someone for not edging out and trying to turn?

I go out into the intersection on all left/yield green turns. Gonna take my shot when I get it. It annoys me when someone will sit through 2-3 stoplights without at least trying.

Honestly it depends. If it is a busy intersection with heavy traffic and I likely won't get through before the light is red, I hang back. But if it is pretty good option that I will get through-- I edge up.
ETA: I do not honk at this situation~

Or wait behind the 'line' in the intersection where you'd be out of the way if the light turns red? It depends on how thick the oncoming traffic flow is. If it's thick and it doesn't look like I will make it before the light turns, I will stay behind the lines. If it's light and I can make it after one or 2 cars, I will inch into the intersection because I know I will make it before the light changes.

Here, it is illegal to edge out. YOu can get fined for blocking traffic or for running a red light.

But if it is pretty good option that I will get through-- I edge up. This. But it also depends on the intersection. We have one near my house where after our light has turned red, the oncoming traffic still as a green light for those turning right. Since they don't stop, I got caught once (and only once - I learned my lesson!) in the middle of the intersection blocking the poor people who had the green light. Ack! And while it bugs me to death that people don't edge up if they have the chance, I won't honk at them.

I pull out into the intersection but don't honk at people who don't. I'd rather they go when they're comfortable with it than cause an accident.

My driver's training instructor taught me to edge out. But I'd never honk at someone if they didn't.

I used to always edge out because having learned to drive in South Florida, that was the only way you were going to get through the intersection. Then I moved to Virginia where turning after the oncoming traffic's light had turned yellow/red could get you a ticket so even though I'm now in Central Florida I'm more likely to hang back unless I know I'll be able to make the turn. I will admit to being more apt to edge out in more congested traffic areas like Miami or Orlando.

If you are the first car (not the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc) in the line to turn left when the light is green for you, you are supposed to "edge out." In our government-issued driver's handbook, it is called "approaching the intersection." If you need to clear the intersection when the light turns red, it is NOT running a red light. How can you be if you are already in the intersection before it's red? I don't honk, but I sure wonder if people even read the government-issued driver's handbook anymore. Check out page 48 for a diagram, which clearly shows the car NOT BEHIND the stop line. www.mpi.mb.ca/en/pdfs/completehandbook.pdf

I go out into the intersection if I know I will be able to turn. If I see a lot of traffic, and I know it's going to be red before I can go, I will stay behind the line. I have gotten a honk or two for doing that, but whatever!

I pull out into the intersection-that was how I was taught in Driver's Ed. If there's a lot of traffic I do the same and go when the light is yellow and I can see that the oncoming traffic is going to stop.
I do not honk if someone else doesn't.

If there is an actual left turn light, I would edge out but wouldn't honk st someone else who didn't. If there is NO left turn light though, and traffic is heavy, I will definitely let my annoyed presence be known if the lead car isn't edging out into the intersection. In that situation, the only way even one or two cars get to turn left is on the yellow. There is one intersection near me that is like this after work, and it drives me crazy. They really need a left turn light there.

I enter the intersection, it was the way I was taught in driver's ed in California million years ago (it could very well be illegal now). I don't honk at people who don't enter the intersection, but call them naughty names in my mind.

Depends on the intersection. In my small town I usually will if I think it's necessary. In places that I'm not familiar with, I am more cautious. I don't ever honk at anyone unless they are drifting into my lane or otherwise about to hit me.

DS just took his driving test last week and lost points for not pulling into the intersection to turn left like you describe.
I didn't think that was legal and I generally don't do it unless I think I can make a turn before the light turns red. (We are in northern Virginia.)

Failed my first driving test for edging out. And you can get a ticket here if you're caught in the intersection when it turns red.
I still do it. But it's illegal. Just sayin'.

I got a ticket for running a red when I was "clearing the intersection" completing my left turn after the red, having edged out on a green dot. I was advised by the court that I should not have been in the intersection in te first place until I could safely turn left.
That was a three point offense and cost me a damn fortune.
From a defensive driving standpoint, trying to scoot through the intersection in heavy traffic on a yellow or just after the red is a pretty good way to get hit by the car coming the other way who is also just trying to scoot through the intersection on the yellow.
I want to get through the intersection as much as you do. I will get through it when I safely can. I will edge out if it makes sense to do so, I will hang back if that is safer. It's just like a right on red - I will do it when it's safe, and you can cool your jets a second or two.

Most of our left turn arrows turn red in San Diego. There are left turn yield intersections, but if the road is large enough to have a left turn lane there's going to be a light specifically for that turn. They stay green a lot longer so more cars can get through.

I edge out and wait for an opportunity, and yes, I might honk at someone in front of me who does not, depending on where I am-- a couple lights here in town have VERY short light cycles, and if you don't get out there, only one or two cars get to go every light cycle. In afternoon rush hour, there can easily be 10 cars waiting in the left turn lane-- I think not getting out into the intersection when you can is inconsiderate to all the cars waiting behind you. (but then I live in AZ, where you have to drive a bit on the aggressive side of the spectrum if you don't want to be plowed over.)

I edge, but don't honk. We joke that in fort collins a light isn't really red until 3 cars have ran it

When driving in DC I definitely edge out. It's the only way to get through sometimes. In MD it depends on the intersection but most of the time I edge out. I never honk if the person in front doesn't do it.

I'll edge into the intersection and take my shot. While I would be slightly annoyed if the person ahead of me didn't do the same thing, I would never honk at them.

I generally don't if the green arrow light is usually pretty long. It does tick off the people I am driving so I would say most people do it.
