Honestly it depends. If it is a busy intersection with heavy traffic and I likely won't get through before the light is red, I hang back. But if it is pretty good option that I will get through-- I edge up. ETA: I do not honk at this situation~ This is what I do as well.

If you are the first car (not the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc) in the line to turn left when the light is green for you, you are supposed to "edge out." In our government-issued driver's handbook, it is called "approaching the intersection." If you need to clear the intersection when the light turns red, it is NOT running a red light. How can you be if you are already in the intersection before it's red? I don't honk, but I sure wonder if people even read the government-issued driver's handbook anymore. Check out page 48 for a diagram, which clearly shows the car NOT BEHIND the stop line. www.mpi.mb.ca/en/pdfs/completehandbook.pdfthis is the rule in NSW, Australia for turning (right) without a green arrow (either it's gone red, gone completely or was never there) but only for the first car in the queue. I don't honk people who don't do it though.
