Where do you keep up on basic fashion trends?
I don't read magazine but would like to know what the current trends are.
I teach high school and would like to look reasonably fashionable. What are this years trends as far as comfortable work clothes? (shoes, tops, etc.) Shirts tucked in, out or partial? Pant length (ankle pants)?
Are there things I should get rid of that have gone out of style in the last couple of years?

I shop a few stores such as Talbots, J Jill, and Chicos. Based on their catalogs and websites I see what seems to be the trends. That said, I keep clothes forever and try to work my older things into newer looks or just buy really classic pieces.

I'm seeing tucked shirts more and more lately now that waistlines are creeping up to the natural waist. Ankle length pants are definitely hot right now. I call them Sabrina length. No idea where I heard it, but I like it. I have a pair and they probably are the worst on me since I'm heavier and short, but I don't care. It's fun to do something a little different. I like the longer sweaters with a belt. (not on me. I think it looks cute on everyone else.) Sometimes still being worn with infinity scarves but those are dying fast. I like looking through Loft's online store to see what's new this year. It's also helpful to go to some high end stores and look through their business wear sections. It gives me a good idea of where the trends are going. BTW, dresses are still very much the thing. Which is good. I love a dress. It makes getting dressed so easy.

Around here Birkenstocks are the trendy shoe.
For pants, the girls wear "joggers" which are usually a tapered, elastic ankle pants. I have a pair that I could wear every day! Off the shoulder tops are "in" but not really appropriate for school. Longer tops / tunics and skinny ankle jeans are pretty common here too since the girls can't wear shorts to school for the most part.
While I wear scrubs every day, I do like to wear cute clothes on my days off and for church. I find a lot of great stuff at Loft. I think they are more fashionable but age appropriate. I guess your style should fit your age. My biggest fashion pet peeve is when I see women wearing clothes that wear clothes too young for her age.

Last week everything in their store was 40% off so I picked up a few things for the new school year. Unfortunately the closest store to me is about 3 hours away, so I plan to place orders online when they have good sales. I'm 50 and I feel that their clothes don't look too young or too old for me. I also teach. In the past few years I have been buying less pants and more skirts and dresses. I think it's easier to change up the look with accessories. We all wear boots in the cooler months. I wear petite pants and love that they have a great selection and not just two or three pairs of pants either. I also think the prices are pretty reasonable, and they hold up nicely. I have this one top and cardigan in my closet that is my kind of "go to" for a funeral. I realized the other day that this set is over 5 years old. I probably shouldn't wear it any longer but it isn't really that out of style. I do love a good dress too! So easy to wear for summer time and into fall with a good denim jacket or cardigan!! Not fashionable in the least, so can't really give you any advice, but did see on the Today show the other day, that lavender/lilac is the in color for this year. Since I heard that, I've seen several things in those colors.

Right?! I asked my dd if I could pull out my old Birks and she said, "Like, HOW old exactly?" I told her my original Birks were from my first time in college. That brat told me I couldn't wear 'em!!! How dare she? I have another pair that isn't so old but as old as she is and she's less mortified by those but I love 'em! I got married a few months ago and treated myself to some new Birks for the honeymoon and I love these too. They are the Mayari style with the toe thingie and I am allowed to wear these in public with her. They are so really comfy and don't make my plantar fasciitis worse and they look cute with my dresses so BONUS! SaveSave

I used to get InStyle magazine, but I dropped it earlier this year. I didn't care for it any longer.

The color olive is big this year. I'm seeing it everywhere. It's one of my best colors, so I love this trend.
Booties seem to be really big again this year as well. I think I'm too old to wear booties w/ dresses, but I wear them w/ jeans.
BaubleBar statement earrings and Kendra Scott jewelry are really popular around here. I think people of all ages look great in Kendra Scott jewelry.

I'll flip through fashion magazines and browse fashion blogs to see what's in style. And if it's something I like, I'm happy that it'll be easy to find for a while. But beyond that, my sense of style is usually so off-trend that I'm just looking at pictures for the hell of it.
Oh, I do check out the yearly and seasonal Pantone color reports. Those are the colors you'll see everywhere. From fashion to home decor.

I think you should pick some stores to shop in that keep up with trends. These might be where you get your more expensive items. Then mix them up with your less expensive basics - like black pants.
I think high waists, elastic waists with pleats, and plain front slim leg are all popular now. Unfortunately not all tops go with each pair of pants. I have fitted tops and looser tunic tops depending on what my bottoms are. I have tuned looser top into looser pants - it's just not an 'easy' look for me.

High waist Elastic wast with pleats No to both of those LOL. But I did see that bootcut pants are coming back in style so I'm happy about that. I was never a fan of the skinny pants.
