I'm putting together some "eclipse" related snacks for work and want to bring some Moon Pies. I've never had one before (and actually I don't even know if they are sold in my corner of the world... I'm off to look). Anyway, my problem is that I've never even eaten one before but they look like they come in different flavors? What is the traditional or original Moon Pie flavor?

Chocolate and I haven't had one in years. I bought my nephew a box a few years ago- they used to be about double the size they are now!

They are all good but the most popular/traditional flavor is Chocolate (although my favorite was always Banana flavored) ![]() Save

They will be in the section of the store with Little Debbie snacks. I think the yellow would be more moon-like.

I'm thinking my best bet is Walmart. Every once in a while I see "weird"* food items and I always figure they are from the South! *Disclaimer: Kidding, joking and said with love.... don't be whoopin' on my Pacific Northwest self!

I'm the weird one. I like the vanilla one. My DH used to love them. I got some not too long ago because they just sounded good. I don't know why. I got home and was greatly disappointed. I don't remember it tasting so stale before. Maybe they were stale. Now this makes me want to try another one.
Oh and no kidding on the shrinkage!

check for canned of boiled peanuts! And then what would I do with them? Why, eat them of course! I'm guessing ya'll also don't put salted peanuts in a bottle of Coke in your part of the world! ETA: And this is one Southern girl who absolutely detests Moon Pies.

If you want the traditional Southern moon pie, it has to be the brand from LANCE. Drink it with an RC bottled cola and you will be good to go. I did when I was a kid at my grandfather's auto parts store. Great memories... If you can't find the LANCE brand then Sam's Club has these...

ETA: And this is one Southern girl who absolutely detests Moon Pies. Yum.... a boiled peanut sounds soooo good! (She says with a tad bit of sarcasm!) And no, no one I know has ever put salted peanuts in a Coke. Again, sounds soooo good..... Okay, now you got me curious... my college DD is coming home tonight from the summer camp she works at during the week... I think she may have Moon Pies, boiled peanuts, RC Cola and salted peanuts in Coke for dinner! Haha.... off the Walmart.....

I'll give you our secret recipe for ballpark boiled peanuts that get RAVED about: 1 Giant Can of Boiled Peanuts from Sams Club + 1 Crockpot.
For the record, I don't like Moon Pies either, but I am totally buying them for my staff on Monday.

I've had banana and strawberry Moon Pies. My favorite is chocolate but they're so rich I rarely eat them anymore. I found the special flavored ones at Bass Pro, of all places! Smart and Final and Orchard Supply Hardware might still carry the chocolate. I haven't wanted to buy them in a long time so I haven't looked for them but I always see them at Bass Pro.
Enjoy!

This Southern girl thinks they are disgusting. But if you're going to eat one, it should be done properly, with an RC Cola (pronounced r-uh c-uh col-uh).
There is a size difference between those in a box and those bought individually (same as Little Debbies).

Get the chocolate, single layer or double decker either one.. I personally don't like any of the other flavors---but I tend to always prefer the original of things.. There are minis too btw some things a friend of mine were thinking of(and she is doing most of them, i have no idea what our menu is but I am getting Moon Pies-which are very common here, I live an hour from Chattanooga where they are made--) anyway menu ideas : chicken salad on *crescent* rolls.. cosmic brownie little debbies, star crunch little debbies, sundrop soda, orbit gum, eclipse gum..adults could do Corona beer, which I hate beer. and there was something else she thought of that I can't remember... I don't tend to do little debbie cakes, but my 19yr old does like those brownies soo might grab him a box because the weirdo doesn't eat Moon Pies hahhaha.. oh an da moon pie tip unwrap one and put it on a saucer and microwave it for 10-12 seconds .. the marshmallow will puff up while its in there, and you'll have to eat it with a fork but OOHHHHHHH so good .

I prefer chocolate but my dad LOVES the banana ones. Lance is the brand you want and don't get the minis. They are not nearly as good.
I second the microwave treatment for 10-12 seconds, so good!! I only eat one about every 2 years but I always microwave it.

I found them at the Rite-Aid in Sammamish years ago. Haven't seen them since (not that I was looking for them in the first place...).

I think I've seen them at Walmart and Smart and Final. I personally like the vanilla ones. I bought one for my sister about 6 months ago. I used to eat them as a kid, not a lot but we definitely had them lying around.
