What do you think it might be? I changed the lens, thinking the first one might be damaged. Still, my right eye gets irritated with a contact. Not AGONIZING, but Enough that I won't wear it. This has been going on for about a month. The eye feels fine without the lens in.

I had that problem several weeks ago - maybe I'm a wimp but I would describe it as agonizing. It was bad enough that I couldn't keep my eye open to drive home from the office and ended up pulling over and taking my contact out. I have had a problem wearing my contact in that eye ever since, as soon as I put it in it starts hurting. I decided that something must have scratched my eye somehow. Such a pain and I HATE wearing my glasses. I'm OCD about them being smudgy.

When I had scratched cornea I couldn't wear my contact, but a month seems like a long time. Mine healed in about a week. Do you wear RGP or soft contacts?

That happened to me in 2005. I'd worn contacts for 20 + years. All of a sudden after a few hours, my eyes started feeling scratched. I'd take the contacts out and my eyes would be red and teary. They looked so bad my pediatrician asked me what was going on. I think he wondered if I was drinking. I went to the eye dr. and he had me try all kinds of different lenses, looking for one that would work. Nothing did. They all had the same effect. He finally told me there was nothing else to try- my eyes had just become intolerant to contacts. It just happens sometimes. I've been wearing glasses full time ever since.

Allergies? I have one eye that gets irritated when certain things are in bloom. My eye Dr suggested eye drops.

I've been wearing contacts for 30 years. I've also had allergies and taken meds for as long. This year, my right eye started getting itchy to the point that I couldn't even wear the lens anymore. I have monthlies, so I kept changing it out. That helped for a day, but no longer.
I went in to see my eye Dr. turns out I have allergies IN MY EYES! He put some dye in my eye and could figure it out. He prescribed patanol drops and using the clear care contact lens cleaning solution.
I used the eye drops for about a month (to get through the spring) and they worked amazingly well. I am continuing to use the clear care system because they really clean lenses well. (I've had trouble with calcium deposits for the entire time I've worn lenses)
Anyway, it was surprising to me that after several decades of lens use and allergies it would just be happening now, but glad that there was a solution so I didn't have to stop wearing lenses.

I had a corneal ulcer once and couldn't wear contacts for a while. My eye felt scratchy when wearing contacts. Time and magic drops worked. Make an appointment with a ophthalmologist.

I agree with this! My Eye Dr used to swear I slept in my contacts, my eyes were always so red and she said it looked like I never took my contacts out and I do every single night. What helped me so much is the Clear Care and it is more expensive but worth it. I did have a couple of problems though, one was don't ever rinse your contacts with that stuff it is lethal lol. You have to let them soak for 8 hours. Also when I would get down near the bottom of the bottle I would need to throw the little container thingy away and use a new one.
I would recommend giving it a try. It made all the difference in my eyes.

I had a period where my eyes wouldn't tolerate my contacts. I wore my glasses for a few weeks and then everything was fine again.

There's a lot of different things it could be--foreign body, corneal abrasion, allergy, dry eye. I get corneal infiltrates sometimes (kind of like an ulcer but not as bad). I'd probably see my eye doctor if it still bothered me after I gave the eye a rest from the contact for a day or two.

I'm going in to the eye doctor this afternoon. I just like to throw out suggestions if the doctor is stumped. Offer my 'internet diagnosis'.
