So this Movie Pass, any peas using it? The price is now 9.95/month for relatively unlimited movies in theaters per month. No repeating movies you have seen before. No IMAX. No 3-D. Only one per day. Only good for one person per card. Movie PassI couldn't get the link to work. Is it for any theater or just certain theaters. I can't imagine that we could use that since we go to a movie every week

I can't find anyone who has signed up for this.
Only $10 per month for unlimited movies (with some exceptions)
Sounds like a money loser. But it's run by a former Netflix person who should know what he is doing.
It says you only pay monthly--maybe a prepaid debit card with a small amount of money on it to start; could it be one of those monthly things that you cannot get out of? (no unsubscribe, etc??)
But I'm interested.

This article explains how the debit cards work, why theaters can't necessarily opt out, even though AMC tries to make it sound like they won't accept the cards, and how the company expects to make money. Also, I read elsewhere, they will collect and sell data based on your movie going habits. However, Netflix, Google, fb etc, all do that already. www.cnet.com/news/moviepass-ceo-mitch-lowe-interview-amc/I was going to get each of my kids a $50 theater gift card, but depending on how this plays our, I might just buy them 5 months worth of memberships instead.

Interesting. I wonder if they have an age limit - I didn't see one on either of the articles and they probably can't due to anti-discrimination laws. But I imagine the business model works great for those 25+ I sign up thinking I'll go more often, but in reality life is busy and I actually only go 6 times a year instead of 3. But high volume users - could just kill them. Teens going to 12 movies a month.
I also don't like that I can't reserve my seats from home - my local theater is all preassigned seating.

Theaters make a substantial portion of their money on concessions, so I would think it might not hurt them.

I Would sign up for this since we go to the movies all the time. However, we usually sit in the reserved, dine in seating only at particular theaters. I have a bad feeling these movie passes won't include those seats. They are normally $19 per seat. I wonder if there is a way to preview what theaters participate in this Movie Pass plan.

The app reviews are abysmal and they don’t give you a way to see a list of supported theaters before you pay. No thanks.
(It does say that the app supports preassigned seating; you just can’t buy before the day of the show.)

We go to the movies a lot. We even have that special AMC card that you pay $15 and get bonus dollars every time you buy a ticket. I have yet to hear anyone who has used the program, so I'm going to wait for a bit before I give it a try. The only issue is that we usually do IMAX screenings for movies.

I wouldn't want to go to the theater before I know that I'm going to get decent seats - nor do I want to make two trips.

If you are going to a new release movie, it might even be sold out if buying the day before.

And you can only purchase one ticket per card, so you can't purchase tickets together. You can purchase consecutively, but who's to say the seats you want won't be sold by another ticket seller while you are processing 4 transactions?
If I was single, or able to go to movies by myself, that would be fine. But, it is always 3 or 4 of us going together and we need to sit together.
I'll be interested to hear how it works for people who can be more flexible.

I heard about this on the radio the other day. We seldom go to a movie theater, but it certainly is an interesting scheme to get more people into the theaters and for those die hard movie goers, could be a real money saver.

Thanks for all the links. We are frequent movie goers. Our theater does not have assigned seats, so that shouldn't be an issue. Our theater just changed from Carmike to AMC though, so I need to make sure they will accept this.

Well, I signed up!! My daughter and I go to the movies probaby an average of once a month and will go more often with this. All 3 theaters in our area are on the list. None have preferred seating so that isn't an issue. We are excited to try it out and will update once the cards come in and we can try it out!
On a similar note - going to 80s night at the drive-in tonight for Sixteen Candles and Top Gun! We can recite all of Sixteen Candles and frequently use lines in our texts, but she hasn't seen Top Gun. Should be fun!

OK, I just signed up for it.
Says I should be receiving the card in about seven days.
Wonder why it doesn't have something so that you can just show it on your phone instead of receiving a card?
Hopefully it doesn't steal all my money out of my account. lol (I think)

No theaters actually participate and there is no way for theaters to opt out, either.

After you buy the tickets and once you are within so money feet of the theater the money is loaded to your card based on some POS code. You then have a half hour to use the funds our they are returned to the Movie Pass company. Theaters are saying they aren't participating but there is no way for them legally to decline, per their agreement to accept MasterCard. www.cnet.com/news/moviepass-ceo-mitch-lowe-interview-amc/
