...soldier. This was on NPR last night. Made me cry. Such an uplifting story about a flag during these times of flags of hate being venerated again. Here, a personal flag was returned to a family still alive to accept it. And two former enemies held hands. "Tatsuya Yasue buried his face into the flag and smelled it. Then he held the 93-year-old hands that brought this treasure home, and kissed them. Marvin Strombo, who had taken the calligraphy-covered Japanese flag from a dead soldier at World War II island battlefield 73 years ago, returned it Tuesday to the family of Sadao Yasue. They had never gotten his body or — until that moment — anything else of his. Yasue and Tatsuya’s sister Sayoko Furuta, 93, sitting in her wheelchair, covered her face with both hands and wept silently as Tatsuya placed the flag on her lap. Strombo reached out and gently rubbed her shoulder. “I was so happy that I returned the flag,” Strombo said. “I can see how much the flag meant to her. That almost made me cry ... It meant everything in the world to her.” The flag’s white background is filled with signatures of 180 friends and neighbors in this tea-growing mountain village of Higashishirakawa, wishing Yasue’s safe return. The signatures helped Strombo find its rightful owners. So glad that there were family members still living to accept the flag back. Such a generous act.

Brings me to tears.
There was so much fear and hatred that brought us to that war, and this shows that love and kindness will prevail, even if it takes a long time.
It's just a shame that we still have some of the same fears and hatred today.

Wow... If that isn't a huge dose of reality I don't know what is. We're all just people. ALL of us.

Reaffirms my faith in people. Wonderful that they were able to find his family.

I'm glad he returned the flag he stole to the family of the soldier he took it from. Sorry, not a hero in my eyes, just a thief who felt remorse decades later as his life is nearing the end.

I'm glad the Japanese family had some answers, and some kind of closure.....did bring a tear to my eye.

Tincin, I'm sorry that you see it the way you do.They were in a horrible battle at the time. War is ugly and causes people to do things that they wouldn't do under normal conditions. To call him a thief in this situation is a little much. We weren't there, we don't know how he got the flag but the important thing is he returned it. I'd like to feel he returned it out of kindness not remorse.
