That's horrible and as a parent I would be pissed and looking for appropriate action to be taken against the coach and his assistants.
When I started in cheer in 3rd grade (Pop Warner) they told everyone that if they ever wanted to be Captain of their squad, they had to show leadership qualities, know the cheers and the dances exactly right and they had to be able to do the splits and a back flip. I didn't even know what being captain of the squad meant, but I knew it must be important. I went home and told my Mom (who had never done dance, cheer, or gymnastics in her life) that I needed to be able to do these things so I could be captain! She knew I could do a back bend and a cartwheel, so she helped me learn to do a back walkover first and then we turned that into a back flip. She asked me to show her how far I could split, so I showed her. I had about a foot to go, so every night while I was watching an 8:00 pm show she would have me stick pillows under myself to hold me up and until I got more comfortable and was able to stretch an extra bit. Every night the stack of pillows would lessen until I was on the floor. It took about 3 weeks and I could do left, right and middle splits. Teaching those muscles to give just a little more each day is the only way you are going to be able to get there without hurting yourself unless you just happen to be a super flexible person to begin with.

yes there is a pea who's daughter is/was a rhythmic gymnast...
to me this is no difference than all the sports moms on 2peas who are shocked and horrified at the thought of a parent sticking up to a coach, see no problem with dance classes that don't allow parents to stay, etc...

I've wondered is this because most women took gymnastics as a child and thus our bodies were made flexible to do this? Uh. It's probably because women's bodies are genetically predisposed to be more flexible... you know, childbirth and everything.

Woah, I think that's a pretty huge leap. I don't think this is in the same universe as being irritated by parents who "stick up to sports coaches". (I think the "sticking up" is more often complaining that "little Johnny didn't get enough play time" than defending a child's physical and mental well being, for what it's worth.) I'd be angry if this had happened to my child. Wouldn't most of us?

I feel sick just reading the first few posts on this thread, so there's no way I am clicking on the link. I think therefore it's easy to guess that my opinion on this ("this" being what the first few posters are talking about) being done to anyone is very negative, especially since an adult is having or allowing other kids to this to one another.

Horrific, I wonder how long this practice has been going on! At least someone recorded it and got the video out. This was his first year as cheer coach at this school. The news article didn't give his background.

I've noticed men can't do this and their knees are up while most women have their knees on the floor. I've wondered is this because most women took gymnastics as a child and thus our bodies were made flexible to do this? I'm very stiff and was never able to sit like you're describing. I could never come close to doing splits, either, despite my efforts and two years of gymnastics when I was a kid. I can't even watch that video.

My body doesnt move like that. I know because I tried the entire summer between 4th and 5th grade to do the splits and it just would not happen. Any coach that thinks you can force it is a fucking dumbass.

I had to stop the video. Those poor girls!
Working towards doing the splits is a long, slow process. I can't even imagine what this coach expected to achieve other than torn ligaments/pulled muscles. Even if the girls achieve the splits this one time, doesn't mean they will continue to be able to do it.

I read the article but didn't watch the video. I was a gymnast in high school. I'd never done any organized sports prior to that, no dance lessons, nothing. I couldn't do the splits to the floor at first, and it took a LOT of stretching and practicing before I could. Eventually I was able to do it, but to be forced to the floor without doing the gradual stretching over time definitely would have caused an injury. I can't believe any coach would think that was an okay thing to do, and it's seriously messed up. Stuff like gymnastics and cheer are inherently dangerous to begin with so I can't begin to fathom why anyone would take the risk of giving a kid a potentially permanent injury on purpose. Stupid. And I thought our coach was an ass for telling some of the girls on the team that their butts were made of jello and they needed to diet...

I think part of the issue here is pure ignorance and lack of appropriate physiology training. Like most things, people's body's are tremendously different. I've seen a pretty wide variety in my daughter's dance studio. Some are naturally crazy bendy and have never had an issue with the splits and can over split "naturally". Many are like my daughter, a few weeks-months of devoted, nightly stretching will achieve splits. Some just never, ever get there - or at least require a level of devotion and time that makes it essentially unachievable. I was curious about this coach's background after hearing his "excuse" - I learned this growing up. He's an ex-cheerleader. He just obtained a communication's degree. I think he was hired for his "acrobatics" with a woeful disregard for his knowledge of coaching and training. www.colorado.edu/today/2017/05/12/class-2017-tumbling-toward-bright-future

This story is local to me. A "doctor" with CU tweeted out "iEvery athlete goes through some difficult pain. If you cannot deal with it mommy is always at home". He is apparently an OBGYN. His tweet and account has since been deleted (he tweeted his reply to a popular anchor at the station and the reporter on the story). Can't imagine having him as my OB during childbirth. Ass

In my eyes a fine and being fired isn't good enough for this coach. Think about what he did. Each girl he did this to told him to stop multiple times. I did watch the video. He ignored her pleas knowing what she was going through physically (tearing muscles and ligaments, extreme pain) but not caring about either that or what she was going through emotionally. To me this is abuse. He used his position as an authority figure to do this. There's got to be something they can charge him with. What he did caused extreme physical agony to each of the girls he did this to. That warrants more than just a fine and the loss of his job.

My daughter did competitive cheer, but came from a gymnastics background. She said that this is also happens in gyms. I'm not saying it is right, but just mentioning that this is not exclusive to cheer.
We encountered an insane cheer coach at the high school. Parents would repeatedly complain year after year to the administration. I guess we were not smart enough to take it to the media. The administration should be held just as accountable.

I work for this school district, and while my kids don't go to this high school, many of my friends' kids do, and this is crazy- they placed a lot of the admin, including the principal, on leave while they sort out who knew what when. This is a very large high school, the whole thing is quite a mess! Video is awful!

It takes weeks or months to train your muscles to be able to do a split. Forcing them like that can cause tissue damage.

I asked my young gymnast who is about to level up in our new gym, and was told that this didn't happen in our previous gym and doesn't happen in our current gym. We aren't Olympic hopefuls or anything, but we do participate in competitive gymnastics and this is not part of our training routine. A LOT of stretching is done in and out of the gym. A little pain is accepted. Screaming pain is past the boundary.

I saw this earlier this morning and was horrified. Lord help the person that did this to my child. Anyone adult who was involved or aware should be terminated. Assault. I am horrified and disgusted. And according to the article this was done to several of the girls...I cannot imagine. Poor things. Both The pain and the humiliation.

While I sincerely hope the correct people are justifiably punished, I really hope it doesn't take down a whole administration if they had nothing to do with it. Now if they knew about it and did nothing, that's another story...

What I also find disturbing is the other girls doing the holding and pushing. It is shocking that kids these days just think it is ok to behave like this. I know it isn't exactly the same but it is in the same vein as the boys watching that man drown and making fun of him. Kids have ZERO value for human life anymore. I don't know if they just don't have connection d/t all of the cell phone and social media use. We didn't have those things when we were kids and we took care of one another. Kids just don't seem to have that these days and it makes me very very sad for this generation. Just like everything else in their lives, people are "replaceable" to this generation. So sad! this video is horrific but I have to disagree with above. Maybe some kids but in my experience, no. I stand by the opinion that kids these days get a bad rap. The young people I know (through my young people) are so far ahead of where we were in my day in terms of humanity and acceptance. No one of the kids I know would do this or allow it to happen if they could stop. Maybe I'm just hanging around the wrong (or right) group of young people.

Some people just have no common sense.
I thought the worst thing about the video was that when they were done torturing the poor girl, they just kind of threw her on the mat instead of bringing her up out of the splits slowly.

I was a competitive gymnast from aged 6 and also a cheerleader in high school. Nobody EVER did this to me or anyone on my team.
This is straight up power trip and ABUSE, At the end of the video, he YANKS her off the floor and throws her down in a heap.
If that was my kid, I would be pressing charges!
