I would call it sushi. Specifically, that type of sushi is called Maki Sushi meaning it is rolled in a Nori (seaweed) wrapper.

Very interesting, thanks for the replies. I think I shall call them sushi rolls from now on. Those aren't traditional California rolls. California rolls have crab or shrimp salad, avocado and cucumber. I don't know what that is. And hand rolls are usually cone shaped. Those are cut rolls before they are cut. I didn't realise that California rolls only referred to the ones with those particular ingredients. And when I was googling images to post on this thread I saw a lot of the cone shaped ones - I haven't seen cone shaped ones before. The sushi rolls that you buy here in take away shops are like the ones in the picture I posted in the OP, with a multitude of different fillings. I quite like the look of the cone shaped rolls, and the fillings wouldn't fall out the other end! There is a take away shop near where DD works that sells sushi rolls. It is the only shop I have found anywhere in this city that sells 'crispy salmon' rolls. They are to die for. DS is playing basketball at the stadium across the road today so I'm going to pop over and pick up a couple or 6!

They are called sushi in New Zealand. I've never seeen anything called a california roll.

Nah, you pick up the slice with your chopsticks, dip it in your soy/wasabi if you like that, and pop it in your mouth.

You can also get the ones that have rice on the outside that are sliced, like the spider rolls I had for lunch yesterday. But they are so messy to eat! (I didn't have chopsticks.)

That's maki - what kind, I don't know. California rolls are uramaki (rice on the outside of the rolls) with crab, cucumber, and avocado. Hand rolls (temaki) have the nori on the outside and are rolled by hand (without a mat) into a cone shape. It's all sushi. This is how we refer to it too. I had never seen makis sold like that. I have only seen it sliced.

The sushi bar that has just opened in the supermarket near my work sells mainly the smaller cut slices like in your picture. But most places sell the bigger uncut rolls.

It looks like Korean kimbap to me. Which just means rice roll.
ETA - sashimi refers specifically to raw fish. Sushi can be raw or cooked. Some places call rolls maki.

I would call it a sushi roll, to clarify that I mean a roll and not just raw fish. I think raw fish not in a roll is sashimi, right? I would definitely not call that a California roll - I recommend California rolls for friends who have never tried sushi because the ingredients are pretty standard and everything is cooked.
