Once I had soup served inside a large bread roll, (Disneyland) and other times a piece of slate instead of a plate but other than that my food has been served on normal plates. Not sure how I would have reacted to some of the serving ideas in this article. Weird ways to serve foodWhat odd ways have you had your order presented to you? |

I've had most of those, and they don't bother me much. Also, soup in a scooped out bread bowl has been around since I was a teenager, so nothing really new there. Some of the other things shown in the link are just weird. Who wants their dessert served on a flip-flop, or their breakfast in a jar (unless its yogurt)? It is just trying to outdo each other in 'being different'. |

Gosh no, I want to know that the plate I'm going to eat off has been through a dishwasher. When I see some of these items I just think how do you get that clean for the next user? If they use brand new for each person I think what a waste of resources. |

Same here, nothing too outlandish. Who the heck would want to eat out of a dog bowl? It would put me off my meal just looking at it. Chips in a tin bucket is enough for me  |

Nothing really unusual that I can think of. I remember when bread bowls were popular a while back. We went to Texas Roadhouse (or something similar) several months ago and the salads were each served in a big metal bowl that was bigger than our dog's food dish, but that's about it. That salad was really good, though. I didn't realize the weird serving dish thing was still a thing- I guess we don't eat at fancy restaurants!  |

Some of those are just gross!
My favorites IRL have been dessert in a mason jar (restaurant aptly named "The Mason Jar,") biscuits in a tin pail with southern fried chicken dinner, and a mashed potato bar appetizer at a wedding in a martini glass.
Shoes, flip flops, dog bowls? Just no.

Famous Dave's BBQ serves stuff on an upturned galvanized trash can lid. At least they put some parchment under the food.

I have also had soup served in a bread bowl. I have been a restaurant that is pet friendly (they have a patio that allows dogs because they are near a park) and all the food is served in dog bowls There is a place here that serves their fries in a small metal bucket. There is another place that serves fries in a metal cone.   |

What is the stuff being served on the flip-flop? It looks like crumbs with green bouncy balls. Is there some connection with the flip flops that would make serving it on one funny?
I can't recall being served food on something very unusual...I've had fries in a wire cone, as pictured above, and bread on a cutting board, but that's about it. I would not appreciate being served food in an item that didn't immediately appear to be sanitary, so put me down as not a fan.

There's a facebook page called We Want Plates that's hysterical. They get photos from diners that are served food in very strange ways. The latest was a dinner served in the back of a Tonka dump truck, I kid you not. I love seeing what ridiculousness gets served up next so I'm all for the crazy trend. But mostly because I never go to restaurants that don't have plates.  |

We have a local "resort" that has a restaurant that serves things on a small wooden cutting board (similar to how they serve the bread at Outback). We often wondered how sanitized those things get, but I'm assuming they get run through the dishrack with scalding hot water.

Well, those are just stupid. I am sure they think they are being clever, but they are not.
Around here we have a restaurant that serves cheese and cracker plates and they use metal trays and they serve the condiments on metal measuring spoons. It is cute, arranged nicely and completely sanitary!
Food can be presented in an unusual way but still be beautiful and practical to eat. Most of those linked would be difficult to eat and no one wants food on footwear.

The flip flop one doesn't bug me nearly as much as the last one of the manky old shoe. At least the flip flop looks new. That shoe--eeew! How could you clean that?

Most of my food is served to me on plates, thank goodness-- but the Scotch egg with the trophy made me laugh! "The World's Best Scotch Egg!" That one, at least, was kind of clever. The shoe, dog bowls, and the flip flop?!? Crazy.
I hate seeing that kind of stuff when we watch food network TV; sometimes people get a gigantic slab of a tree trunk, etc. My thought is always 'how do you wash that?'

SaveSaveI'm a fan of the white plate, even in my own home. There are so many beautiful dishes to choose from, but Ive always felt that the plate should be neutral to showcase the food and you can add the personality in the centerpiece, napkins and table clothes or runners. Those are much easier to switch out than needing a whole other set of dishes for a different mood or theme. That being said, I do like the idea of a clever serving idea, preferably one that doesn't involve shoes. Like the scotch egg served in a trophy and the condiments served on measuring spoons. I've also done the mashed potato bar with the potatos in a martini glass and tomato soup in a shot glass to go along with grilled cheese wedges and other Pinteresty ideas for a party. |

My mother-in-law has square, very flat dinner plates and I hate them. I can only imagine it's similar to eating off a plank or a flat rock. Food falling off the edges, yuck!

That flip flop can't possibly be food grade material, can it? Unless it was specially made for this purpose. If not, I can't get over the idea of that horrible chemical ell you get with cheap flip flops. Ewwwwww!
