Our bath towels are shot. Dh has two requests for towels - soft and absorbent. Well, to make them soft, I add fabric softener (I know - that kills the absorbency). He would also like a couple of bath sheets along with regular towels. Dh doesn't skimp on anything so price isn't an issue. Any recommendations on brands you like. I am willing to buy online as well so please let me know where you got the towels! Thanks!

Charisma towels from Costco. The bath sheets are huge and fluffy. Stop using fabric softener and use plain white vinegar in the softener dispenser (or just dumped into the drum of the washer) instead. Not only will it help keep your towels from getting that funk washer smell but they'll stay absorbent. Get some wool dryer balls and throw them in the dryer. That'll help keep them fluffy without the fabric softener. Towels washed or dried with fabric softener don't feel soft to me. They feel greasy and they don't get me dry.

Good tip. My towels now have a weird, musty smell that I can't get rid of even in a sanitize wash and dry!
I looked at the towels at Costco. Do they have bath sheets as well as bath towels? I only saw the towels.

I'll be watching this thread as I used to swear by the Costco towels, but the last sets we purchased were horrible. The brown towels developed bleach streaks, I'm assuming from the acne products DS uses, and all of them looked worse for wear after about six months. My other set from Nautica still looks great and hasn't experienced the streaking issues.

I only saw the towels. I just watched a YouTube video by Clean My Space. She says to first wash the towels with a mixture of 1 cup hot water and 1 cup white vinegar. Then wash again with a mixture of 1 cup hot water and 1 cup baking soda. I have tried it yet but planning to this weekend

The last towels I bought were Chaps at Kohl's. Nice and thick and plush. Don't buy them too thick--I bought a set from Lands' End thinking they would be great. But they were so thick that they never dried.

I only saw the towels. Yes, they do have bath sheets too. It's all I will buy anymore, I hate itty bitty towels! I want to say they're about $12 or so which is a great price for such nice towels. Do you have a front loader? That could be the cause of the smell because water gets trapped at the bottom of the drum where it sits and stagnates. Google "clean my washer with vinegar" and it will tell you how to get the smell out of the washer itself, and it will stop transferring the icky smell to your towels. I let my washer dry out completely between wash days by leaving the door and detergent drawer open so it can evaporate. Then it doesn't ever get stinky in the first place. After the washer is cleaned out you can put the skunky towels in a load with a cup or two of white vinegar only, no detergent or bleach or anything else but hot water. If they still smell after that, try washing again with a half cup of baking soda in the load and nothing else. I've gotten that icky "closed up cabin" smell out of towels and bedding this way, it really works!

My other set from Nautica still looks great and hasn't experienced the streaking issues. I don't think the streaking is the fault of the towels, it was the products wiped off on them that bleached them. I would get my kid a bunch of cheap white towels that can be bleached to use after using those products so my regular colored towels would stay nice. We have the Costco towels in two of three bathrooms at home and both bathrooms at the cabin and we haven't experienced any of that. We also have a bunch of their beach towels in bright funky colors at the lake that we bought more recently and those have held up great too.

The Nautica ones I purchased were brown as well and didn't experience the same problems. I think it was this "batch" of towels that Costco carried because I've purchased other colors from them in the past and didn't have the same problem.

Lands End towels. Well at least the ones I bought about 9 years ago are fabulous and still going strong.

The Company Store
Their Turkish Cotton Towels are so soft and absorbent. I never use fabric softener/sheets when washing and they stay beautifully soft and absorbent. The great color choices are a bonus.

We like Lands End supima towels. I'm not sure if they have bath sheets or not. They're very soft and absorbent. I wash them hot with a vinegar rinse.

We just bought 4 sets of the Restoration Hardware 802-gm Turkish cotton towels. They are amazing! The sizes of RH towels is more generous than others as well. The regular bath towel was so large we didn't buy bath sheets like we normally do. Very absorbent, as well as soft. I add vinegar to the fabric softener slot and it works very well. To get soft and absorbent, you want to look for a long staple cotton, either Turkish or Egyptian. The American long staple cotton is called Supima. So start with a towel made of one of those. Also compare the sizes. Less expensive towels are going to be smaller.
