Hey all, my thoughts are with all the TX and Louisiana peas affected this morning. We are still here, water still not in the house and power still on. We are incredibly lucky. Many friends have water in house and some have lost everything.
It's still raining hard and more predicted, so no one here is getting too comfortable.

Here in San Antonio, they were expecting us to get 20 inches of rain. I think we've maybe had 2 or 3. We seriously dodged a bullet. I hope that everyone in the path of the storms stays safe! I don't even think we've had much flooding. There hasn't been any around us. Well the weather got it wrong for us here in SA. I'm in the central part of the city and we have had on/off rain and very windy, but nothing near 20 inches. East of here, just about 30 min, they've had a lot of rain. I am deeply worried about my friends in Houston, though. Houses there that haven't ever had water EVER are now flooding.

Good morning from waterlogged Houston. I've been trying to get on here to post and have been sidelined by multiple texts from family and friends checking up on us. Thankfully we are fine. We had 12" of rain during the storms last night. It's been a steady light rain since I woke up at 7:30, and looking at the map it seems another heavy band is on its way. Our street was completely flooded, with water up into the edge of the yards. Fortunately the water has all drained off here. Unfortunately much of Houston is under serious amounts of water.

The Houston area school district, which was supposed to start school tomorrow and had already postponed to Tuesday, has now postponed until the Tuesday after Labor Day due to the widespread damage to the city.

The mayor is opening up shelters - libraries, George Brown, other centers - by force if necessary if they are in places where people can walk to. It might be a good time to check out what's near you now, while it's still daylight. There must be a list somewhere online.

I'm saying prayers for all the Houston peas and all my friends and family in the path of the storm. I'm glad you all are checking in.
I've talked to several of my old neighbors in The Woodlands and they are all doing fine so far. My son is Austin at UT and it sounds like he'll be fine as long as he stays off the roads.
Stay safe everyone!

Here is a link the Houston Transtar map of current road conditions. The blue raindrops indicate an area with high water. Very sobering to see it in this format. For those not from the area, Houston TranStar manages the region's transportation system and is the primary coordination site for state, county and local agencies when responding to incidents and emergencies. We've been advised to call 911 if the water rises to knee level in the house. Which it isn't likely to do anytime soon, fortunately. The water on the street looks to be at hip level or higher. Not safe to walk through.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers, Merge. There are rescues being done for areas that are hardest hit. I hope you won't need that.

Just because the main weather and news channels are concentrating on the Houston area.... further to the east along the Texas coast, I have friends posting videos and asking people not to drive down certain streets because that creates waves that pushes water into their homes.
ETA - This is a criminal offense, in case y'all were wondering, for a car or truck to push water into your home while driving down the street - unless it's an emergency vehicle.

We are almost all 1950s bungalows so 2-stories are rare. Can't think of any on my side of the street.

Merge - please keep posting while you are able. I've been worried about you, yivit , teri and all our other Houston peas in the flood prone areas. How are all of your children handling this? We are still doing fine here. Fortunately there has been enough break in between the rains to allow the streets to drain, before the next band when they fill up again. On a lighter note, I've discovered the sure way to hear from long lost family and friends is to have a major flooding event that apparently is all over the news media. Now I'm off to locate my chest waders and fly fishing boots...just in case (I wish I were kidding about that).

Seriously, though, there is a check-in page on FB. It's called Hurricane Harvey Facebook Safety Check. I've already checked in. That's where many of the long lost people are posting. After many years of living here I'm used to people checking in during storms. However, the amount I've had checking in this time is way above the normal. It just shows how serious this event has become. I hope everyone doesn't forget about the devastation that has occurred to the West of us in Rockport, Port Aransas, Victoria, and so many other small communities. So much of Texas is suffering from Harvey's devastation.

We are just fine here; enjoying a break in the rain which is allowing the water to recede a bit. Friends all around us are not so lucky and many have lost everything. We hear there is water in many HISD schools, including my girls' high school and their old middle and elementary schools. Based on reports it's most likely there is water in my school as well but no confirmation of that. Girls are nervous but doing pretty well. One has decided that meteorology may be a field she wants to explore for a career. HISD has cancelled classes for the entire week. I think that's optimistic. I think it will be at least a month before we can get this mess cleaned up and everyone back to school. My heart breaks for my students; I hear the area around Richmond and Chimney Rock where many of them live is completely inundated.

The local NextDoor was lit up because some idiots were riding jetskis up and down residential streets and pushing water into homes. And no, they weren't rescuing people. The stupid is strong.

DH is a travel cath lab tech and his current assignment is floating between East Hospital in Pasadena and Bayshore Medical Center. East was evacuated and closed on Friday due to being in a flood prone area and he is hearing the Bayshore might be getting ready to close as well. He is not traveling back to Houston today from Dallas. I am not even sure that he will be able to return at all this week. He has the option to work at other HCA facilities in the Houston area, but he would need to find one on the NW side of Houston that is not as affected by Harvey as the south side.
He has already signed a contract to go work at Oklahoma University Medical Center for the new TAVR program that they are starting...but it is not supposed to start until October 3rd. I am going to bet that his Houston hospitals will not need him as a traveler anymore because the hospitals will be closed. He is going to check tomorrow to see if he can start at OUMC sooner.

My heart breaks for my students; I hear the area around Richmond and Chimney Rock where many of them live is completely inundated. I agree with this. I know they try to get school going as fast as they can because it creates normalcy, but I don't think they will even find enough schools to open even if they shuttle kids to ones that are less damaged. My heart goes out to the many, many people who are already living with limited means. Losing everything means starting over from zero with zero.

Doing ok up in Kingwood! We've gotten lots of rain and I just looked outside and my street is filling up. We've kept our power, which makes me feel very fortunate. We are good with just staying in until this mess passes. My kids' school has been postponed until the Tuesday after Labor Day and I'm waiting to here if the district I teach in will follow the same plan.

TXMary - So glad you have had encouraging news. I was looking through some photos of Rockport and saw the RV park that was demolished. I immediately thought of you and hoped it wasn't your park. Merge - just checked the map again and it looks like it's moving out of your area. Hope you are able to get some sleep tonight! Sounds like it will be a long time before we really know anything. The mayor of Port Aransas said this morning it will be weeks before residents will be allowed to return to their homes. They are hoping to set it up so they can get in long enough to see the damage but there will be a curfew. We hope to get more information when our resort staff/POA are allowed back in...whenever that might be. My heart just breaks for Houston. Hope all our Peas are safe!

They just announced that IAH is closed until further notice. They had already closed Hobby earlier. DD was supposed to fly out to Chicago in the morning so that was obviously cancelled. Doubt she'll be going downtown tomorrow for work either since Memorial Drive is now a massive river due to Buffalo Bayou. Just talked to her and she said it is still rising. Apparently there have been sightings of armadillos swimming for higher ground. The things you see here!
