DH and I are heading to Canada for the first time this coming May. Can someone tell me about what to expect for the weather? Snow? Rain?

Hopefully sunshine, very good chance of rain, zero chance of snow unless you go into the mountains.

It could be beautiful. Rain is likely but snow isn't. Average temps will be between 50 and 60F.

Although Vancouver is in Canada, it has one of the most mild climates in the country - indeed typically it only receives snow a handful of days a year. To give you a bit of perspective, it is only about a 2 hour car ride from Seattle - so whatever you would expect in Seattle that time of year, you can pretty much expect the same in Vancouver. That said, you should expect rain that time of year. Your best bet is to check out one of the weather forecasting websites to get a 14 day forecast just before you pack. If you want to take a look at the monthly average temperatures, this site has it.

The weather could be overcast, rainy or sunny. Temps probably between 50 - 70 degrees. Should be lots of beautiful spring flowers to see!

Thank you all so much! DH surprised me with this trip and I began to panic because we are not usually in a cold weather area. I wasn't sure if I should pick up a heavier coat this fall/winter for our trip in May or not.

You will need a tshirt, sweater, polar fleece and a jacket (spring weight) every day but not at the same time. Morning could be cool or cold. Noon could be warmer and evening will be cool. I wear polar fleece all year long just because. If you are going to nice restaurants I would bring something dressy. If you are going for sushi then casual is fine, too. I was in YVR July 2 and it was pretty casual everywhere. Tourists usually wear pants or jeans. Chances of it being really warm in early may are possible but evenings will be cool. Mother's Day I wore a sleeveless dress to dinner. It can also rain.
If if you are fitness buffs there is a very challenging trail called the Grousse Grind and it opens I think at the end of May. It's a workout!

I live in Victoria which is on Vancouver Island and we have generally the same weather except it rains less here.

Plan to layer -- long sleeve or short sleeve tshirt with sweatshirt and a waterproof jacket. We drove up Friday to Vancouver and came back yesterday it was very quick trip but we had the best time! You will definitely want to check out Granville Island and the Aqua bus. Lots and lots of other things to see and do too.

I'm so envious I've been to Vancouver quite a few times and when I've done so in May it's always been pleasant - warm weather, with little rain. Maybe we've been lucky! Have a fabulous time and wave to my very dear friend Cathy for me, would you?
