--well said, I say---
The costliest storm in history...a few thoughts...
Much will be said about Harvey in the coming weeks, and you better believe the price tag will be enormous.
It is easy, when the weather is clear and sunny, to say that the government is too large, and "FEMA" needs their budget cut. This year that budget was 7 billion dollars. Next year, it is 3.3 billion, if the budget is not modified.
But when the price tag hits 160 Billion USD for this storm (yesterday's guestimate), your local church can't foot the bill. Your local town can't foot the bill. Your county can't foot the bill. Odds are, your state can't foot the bill to get people back on their feet. And that isn't making people whole...that's just pointing us in the right direction.
JJ Watt, for all of his prestige, is on his way to raising $10 Million dollars for storm victims. That's a lot of money, until you realize that it is approximately 0.0000625 of what it will take to rebuild.
Your government. Your wasteful, bloated government that you love to bash for taking your tax dollars. "Them." It will take an entire country paying their taxes to help the residents of a relatively small chunk of the country.
In exchange, the country will have refineries brought back online and gas will flow out to the country, ports reopened and goods from all over the world will make it to places like Nebraska, and the greatest medical complex in the world will be operational again and developing cures for diseases of which many of us have never even heard.
Do I think our government is perfect and never wastes a dollar? No. Do I hate writing the check? Yes. But at times like this, your government is the only entity large enough that can step in and make sure millions of people have food, water, sewer services, and some semblance of shelter when they have lost everything.
Oh.....and mosquito control, and malaria medication if required. This is the Gulf Coast in August...and there are mosquitoes...lots of them.
