Got mine and did some experimenting. I haven't had much time to play recently but thought this was interesting. I marked the old lid and base with painter's tape so I don't lose track of which is which. The new platform stamped my big background stamp better, but not perfect. There were still voids that I couldn't get to stamp, no matter how hard I pressed, but not nearly as bad as the old lid/base. Tried the new lid on the old base and it stamped almost perfectly. The old lid plus old base was terrible. New lid plus new base was better, but not great. New lid and old base, almost perfect. I'll try more later.

That is weird. Mine works fine, I haven't had any troubles at all.
Sorry you are having such a difficult time, I hope that Tonic figures this out for you.

That is strange. Mine works perfectly. It's the European model, not the USA one.

This is a particularly difficult stamp to get a perfect impression. The results are pretty consistent - the misti's flexible lid definitely helps. Now I'm not sure the new stamp platform is any better or different from the old one. Too many variables, I guess. These are all inked with a pretty juicy pad and stamped once with a moderate amount of pressing. It's a lot harder with the stiffer lid of the stamp platform. Attachments:

With a different, but equally hard to stamp background, the results were different. I'm thoroughly confused.

I haven't received my replacement yet but apparently it is on the way. The email I got from Tonic says they're testing out the lid and they want me to do the same testing as you did. I was hoping they got it right but now that I see this I'm not so sure... I was really hoping to love my stamp platform, and hope I still will, but at the end of the day (and trust me it is taking everything I have to say this) my Misti stamped perfectly from the first day I got it. If it wasn't all cracked and becoming unusable, I would be much happier with it than I am with my Tonic!

This is a clear solid stamp. I honestly don't even know which combination of lid/base to keep now. I guess it doesn't matter as long as I'm keeping the misti anyway. Attachments:

I take it that was one pass with each? It's interesting to see the results side by side like that. I am sorry you haven't been getting good results with the Tonic. I am reminded of my attempts to get clean cuts with intricate thin dies. I posted about it awhile back. My old, original Cuttlebug works better for me than either my old or new Big Kick. (Yes, I have three portable manual die cutters....don't ask me why). Most people with both of those die cutters get better results with a Big Kick. The Big Kick did not work well for me when cutting intricate dies, no matter how they were shimmed. I was glad I had kept my Cuttlebug. It makes me wonder why different people get different results with tools like the stamp platforms or die cutters, but it happens. I love that we have the choices. I love competition in the product world. It's good for the consumer. If one product works better for you than another, at least you have the option to choose the one that works best for you.

Those were with one inking and in some cases, several presses of the lid. The MISTI example was one press. I don't regret getting the tonic. I'll still use it for smaller line stamps and it should be fine for smaller solid stamps with multiple inking.
Also I totally agree about choices. We use a lot of tools and different brands of the same tool work differently for different people. Unfortunately the MISTI works better for me. LOL

gale w, I know it was not meant to have one, but have you tried all the variations with a piece of foam also? I am wondering if that is the problem overall.

But it feels wrong somehow. Like the foam is preventing the top from closing and not pressing evenly on the entire stamp, if that makes sense. And if I move it further from the hinge there isn't a little fence on the other sides to put paper against. I need to find some thinner foam.

gale w I'm sorry that you're having issues. Instead of foam how about trying a piece of thicker paper board (chip board) like a cereal box or the board that comes with a paper pack, cut to 8x8 to fit the base?

My girlfriend has trouble stamping with anything. I had her use a brayer. That has resolved her problem.
I also have reminded her to make sure to flip the lid on the tonic!

I still haven't gotten an impression that makes me want to use my platform

I went to the Tonic website to "contact us" and sent in an email. I think it took two days to get a response. I was actually surprised that they didn't ask for photos or any "proof" of bad stamping. The customer rep simply said they have had very few returned but are testing a new lid and acknowledged that some people do have faulty platforms. She asked for my address, gave me some instructions for testing out the new platform and told me there would be a return address label for me to ship back my platform. I sent her my address and about a week later I got a shipping notice from Tonic followed by an email from the same customer rep apologizing for the delay in shipping and telling me to contact her if I have any questions or problems with the new platform. Absolutely amazing customer service! I haven't received the new platform yet but expect that it will arrive sometime next week. I'm hoping to have better results with it that I am having with my original one.

My new stamp platform arrived yesterday and let me tell you, I could tell the difference between the new and the old when putting them side by side immediately. The lid on the new one is raised more than on my old one and you could tell this just by looking at them. I could only use the Tonic magnets with my old platform because if I used my magnetic bar or my Misti magnets, the lid didn't close properly. I immediately pulled out my magnetic bar to try with the new platform and bingo, the lid closes properly! Honestly that test was good enough for me! But I pulled out a rubber cling stamp, put it in the corner of the platform and closed the lid. While it didn't close the way my Misti lid closes, it definitely is a big improvement over the old platform and I got a good impression on the first try. And those tests were good enough for me to know that Tonic has definitely made some changes to the lid.

I ended up keeping the new lid and the old base. Some tests showed that all combos of lid and base were the same but some skewed in favor of the new lid/old base combo. But (and it almost kills me to say this) my misti still works better. I'll use it for the larger backgrounds. I think everything else can be done in the TH with multiple inkings and stampings.
