We live in Central Oregon and have been dealing with forest fires for about 3 weeks, AQI (air quality index) has been as high as 808. We have a devastating fire in the Columbia River Gorge, a National Scenic Area that is beyond gorgeous! It is so heartbreaking to know this area is being destroyed by fire. Fortunately loss of human life has not occurred as of yet. So sad as the one fire was started by a 15-year-old with fireworks. Latest on Oregon fires Our boys have had outdoor practices and games cancelled due to air quality, and on of the maps shows that both Oregon, Washington, and Northern California are just inundated!

I live in the mouth of the gorge just a few miles from Multnomah Falls. The fire is at 33,000 acres at last I read. I'm still at a Level 2 evacuation alert but feeling more hopeful today. The weather is changing and the fire has nearly stopped its run westward though it is still growing. My daughter, granddaughter and son-in-law were evacuated Monday, are staying with us, and probably won't get to go back home for another week or so (as long as the fire doesn't take their home.) The air quality has been terrible but is a little improved today. I found yellow crime scene tape tied to my house number sign at my driveway today and was told it means that fire fighters will try to save our house if the need arises. Red tape would mean your home was indefenceable. (sp?) Thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow so we're all praying for lots of rain and no lightening strikes. People have done a lot of praying for us here and now it is our turn to pray for all those in the path of Irma. God bless you all and stay safe.

I live in No CA. While there are not any fires in the immediate area, the smell of smoke is strong and the air quality is bad. I'm so sorry about beautiful OR. I've spent a lot of time there and am so sad. My Parents and grandparents all lived there and would also be so sad to see all of this terrible destruction.

I'm in the Portland area. The gorge is one of my favorite places. So many wonderful trails. I love to go with my grandchildren. Fire marshal says there will be some beauty left, and of course, it will begin healing itself, but I weep fir the beauty lost, and the stupidity that caused it.

It's so strange that my house just got 4-5 feet of rain dumped on it in a 5 day period and the NW is so dry it's burning.
Prayers for you up there!

It's been sad watching the news and it's particularly galling that it was human caused. Yesterday it was raining buckets here and I kept wishing I could send it to the NW. Hope everyone stays safe.

Its horrific. All the news on Houston and now Florida is taking over the majority of the news but this is just as tragic.
God help us.
I can't help but feel we in California are now due next for The Big One. I am seriously having nightmares about it. I mean, really, what all is left? Ugh. I'm in such a state over this, such a helpless, hopeless feeling.
