Backstory: We live in a neighborhood a few miles from town, but there are four neighborhoods right in a row with hundreds of houses, so I wouldn't say I live in the "country." Also relevant, our neighborhood has no street lights, so it's pitch black after dark.
People let their dogs run around without being leashed around here, which is unfathomable to me, but I've tried to get used to it.
We ended up taking a dog in a few years ago after the owners left him wandering around for days while they were out of town. We weren't trying to take their dog, but we thought he wasn't wanted any more and I didn't want him to get run over. We offered to give him back to the owners after they got back to town, but they decided to leave him with us. We still have him...he's doing great.
Last Saturday a dog with a collar wandered onto my neighbor's property while we were having my son's birthday party, and then followed us home. None of us had ever seen him wandering before, and had no clue where he came from. It was about to get dark, and being that he was a small dog (10-15 lbs.), we took him in for the night, which then turned into a week.
We posted his picture on the lost/found group for our area on Facebook. We posted several notices on both of our walls. I brought him to the vet to check to see if he had a microchip. He did not. I circulated his picture to a neighborhood group that I belong to via email. No results. No one has come looking for him either or posted a flyer. I haven't went door to door, but it's so hot here that I can hardly stand being outside no matter what time of day it is.
I was going to make a flyer to post at each of the entrances to the neighborhoods and post them this weekend to see if I could find his owner. People frequently ride around our neighborhood on golf carts, and tonight the dog was outside and some people on a golf cart recognized him as belonging to people a little ways down the road from us.
(Side note: The other day my husband was outside with the dog, saw a lady outside on the phone at that particular house, and the dog ran RIGHT by her into the garage. By that time, we'd had the dog for several days. She had absolutely no reaction, and my husband waited right by her for five minutes to ask about the dog. She never acknowledged that my husband or the dog was even there, so he assumed that the dog didn't belong to her and walked back home with the dog.)
We needed to go somewhere tonight, and the people on the golf cart offered to bring him home, so we accepted. When we returned a couple of hours later, we went to the house to make sure that the dog was theirs and that they still wanted him. They weren't home and the dog was outside again, unleashed, so we brought him home.
I'm going to go talk to the people about the dog again tomorrow, but they have made no effort to try to find him in a week's time. I don't understand. He's a cute, sweet dog. I would be frantically looking for my dog until I found him! What do the refupeas think?

This refupea thinks that the owners suck. They are trying to get the dog gone without paying a surrender fee and they don't care if he gets ran over, eaten, or if another family takes him.

I do not understand these people, either!

Could the people who returned him have just left him if the owners weren't home? Maybe they don't know he was brought back.
At any rate, I can't imagine what I would do if my dog went missing. I'd be a lunatic. They don't deserve to have a sweet little guy if they're so unconcerned about him.

I agree. I don't understand either. I would be in a panic if I could not find my dog. People like that should not have pets.
Maybe, however it is someone that is on vacation that does not know their dog has gone missing from whomever they left him with. My new dog we got by finding her and no one claiming her. That is ok because by the end of the first week, I wanted no one to claim her. She is so lovable.

I had thought of that, and that may very well be the case. But I keep going back to the fact that the dog ran right by her after being gone for several days and she had no reaction. Gah. I don't want to take anyone's dog, but I don't want to leave him with anyone who is going to neglect him or not care about his well being! OT: This post makes me a mushy pea, lol!

That makes me so sad. I just adopted a stray that no one claimed. Not sure what breed, just a little guy, possibly a shih tzu, poodle mix. But he's awesome. Knows commands, potty trained, probably not even a year old. How could someone not miss this guy. I've only had him 2 weeks and I'd be frantic if he went missing. I got him chipped right away. Will you keep this baby if you can't find his owners. I hope so. You sound like good loving dog people. And you know if you keep him, there's a rule. We need pix!!!!!! And what will you name him? And thank you for taking care of him!

Linda...probably so, because I won't be able to give him up. At this point I don't even know if I want to give him to the owners! If it seemed that they loved him I would be all for it, but I don't want him to get run over or neglected because they don't care! I'm glad that your doggie has found a great home too!

I don't understand why people choose to have pets, then neglect them.
If I were in your position, I would probably write a note and leave it on their door - if it's their dog and they want him back, they can contact you.

Personally, I would talk to the owners face to face before I would decide they are dead beats. There is the chance the golf cart people were incorrect that these people are indeed the owners(since the woman didn't acknowledge(and the dog vice versa) this may well be the case), or as others have already posted the dog may not have been directly returned and just dropped off in the yard. I think it's best to make sure before making a judgement of the people or a decision of what to do with the dog.

That just seems so crazy to me. I would be sick with worry if my pet went missing!

Back in the 60's a family in our neighborhood in NOLA was moving. The family got in the car, the man leaned down, patted their dog on the head and drove off. My father was furious and said he now knew the character of our former neighbor. Daddy walked around the neighborhood until he found a family to *adopt* that sweet dog. To this day that story hurts my heart.

That's so sad! Are you wanting to keep him. He sounds like he's comfortable at your place. I would talk to the "owners" and go from there, adding something like - you're happy to take care of him.

That IS sad Joy! Glad your dad found that sweet puppy a home. I have decided I am going to the neighbor's house (without the dog) to talk to them tomorrow. I'll let you know what they say!
ETA: Good idea AZRedhead. I will make sure to say that tomorrow. I would love to keep him, but my husband is currently against it because right now money is pretty tight. He's a huge dog guy though, so I'm sure I can talk him into it.
And even if not, he's a Papillon mix, and that's my sister's preferred breed. She's been texting me questions about him all week and said she would foster him if needed to. She is another huge dog lover and takes wonderful care of her dogs, so I know if I had to give him up he could go into her care.
