Our gas station pumps are inspected yearly by the county division of weights and measures. This morning I was happily pumping away when I noticed a red sticker on the end of the machine that said "Rejected" with a date of 8/27 and indication that the station has 7 days to rectify the deficiencies. Now I'm not a rocket scientist but it seems like common sense to shut down a pump that has been rejected.

I've never come across that in my life.
Like you, though, I would think they should have shut it down.

I have seen it on pumps that were shut down.

This is about Michigan but it's probably similar in other states: Pumps cannot be off by more than 3.3 ounces in a five-gallon test. That's a 0.5-percent margin of error, or 0.1 gallon on a 20-gallon fill-up. Field supervisor Catharine Hinkley has seen five-gallon tests off by 0.4 gallon too much (eight percent) to 0.3 too little (six percent) in her 10-year tenure.
If a pump is outside the accuracy window, it is "condemned for repair." The station is given notice to fix it promptly but can continue to sell gas from it in the meantime. If a pump is off by double the regulation or something is more seriously wrong (a leak, for example), it's shut down on the spot. That's called "condemned for use."The Pump Police

I think it should've been placed out of order.
I actually reported a gas station that wasn't correct. When the nozzle clicked off I noticed that the display kept running for several seconds. The next day that pump was out of order.

No, I've never seen that either. But I agree, if you fail the inspection, you need to stop using the pump. That's not cool.

I agree, the pump should be shut down. If I saw that sticker on it, I'd go to a different pump.

Wow, that pump should've definitely been shut down.

Maybe it was repaired but not re-inspected yet so they thought it was ok to turn it back on.
