I love the look of stenciled backgrounds on pages and cards, but don't really know what to do to achieve that look, or what to buy to make it most effective. I don't use these often enough to remember which is which. This last week I used TH "texture paste", and it crackled when drying. Not sure if that is what it is supposed to do, or if that was the result of my spritzing it when it was still wet? Last night I did some stenciling with white gesso, which turned out very smooth, but of course very white. Was great for painting over the top. 950nancy asked a question in my "Grrr" thread about which pastes work the best, and since I don't know the answer, thought I would pass this on to the peas... I too was wondering which brands/types of embossing pastes you use: for a smooth but raised finish? for a rough/ textured finish (like for bricks or rocks or that kind of texture)? Also, if you want to add colour to an embossing paste, what do you use? Paint? Reinker? Liquid from a spray mist bottle? |

I remember watching a Jennifer McGuire video where she colored Wendi Vecchi embossing paste with Distress reinkers. So that's what I do.

I've used and loved the Wendy Vecchi embossing paste and haven't had issues with it cracking. I've taken an ink pad and smeared it onto a non stick craft sheet and then mixed it with the paste to color it and it's worked well.
As a side note, if you get into glitter pastes, I would skip the Viva Decor brand. I found that it's not as glittery as other brands I've tried, which means that when you cover an area with it it's not totally opaque. That was a big bummer for me.

I usually color mine with mists or ink. I've also used gelatos mixed with gesso or a bit of water.

I like liquitex flexible modeling paste. It doesn't crack if the paper bends. It's cheaper than Golden but I like all Things Golden. You can color it with other mediums too. I've also added glitter to it and have added glitter to the top while still wet (left stencil in place, added glitter, tapped down slightly, lift stencil). No problems with either method. I've colored gesso as well. I already had the "art" brands so I didn't think I needed to pay more for a scrapbook/mixed media person's name on the container.
For coloring i've used spray inks, acrylic paint, pearl ex powder, lumiere metallic acrylics, and tube water colors. Just remember to be careful when using a less pigmented medium. It can thin out your paste. The best option is something highly pigmented. Reinkers are highly pigmented therefore you shouldn't need a lot. As for sprays, Lindy's stamp gang sprays work the best in my opinion. They seem to be more pigmented. If you had pigment powders, that would probably be the best option but I don't.
For the finish - smooth versus rough: it's all about the application. You'll need to use the side of your palette knife or an old gift card and scrape it smooth for a nice clean finish. Rough - after applying, use the flat side of the pallet knife and just sort of tap the top. Different applications of strength yield different results.
It's so much fun just to play with this. And now I want to go play.
