DH and i both woke up sore this morning so I am thinking it may be time for a new mattress. Ours is 13 or more years old.
DH sleeps during the day most days as he works nights so we do need one that doesn't sleep hot.
What kind do you have and do you recommend it

Sleep number with the new temperature pad. I have not had a problem with waking up sore since getting our SN bed a few years ago. We don't have the temperature pad, but it looks like it would be a good addition.

We bought an inexpensive sealy foam mattress with a layer of memory foam on the top. It took some getting used to but we really like it now. I think it's 12" thick..

Avoid memory foam. DH could not sleep on the stuff. We hated our sleep number bed it just didn't last long at all before it just wasn't comfortable at any setting.

We both love our memory foam. Before we bought our current mattress we had a memory foam topper for years.

My bed is a standard coil mattress with a 3" memory foam pad over that, and I love it sooooo much. A lot of the memory foam these days comes with "cooling gel pellets" or some such nonsense. Whatever. I can only tell you that I tend to sleep hot, but I don't have any problem with the memory foam.

I had a memory foam mattress which I thought was very comfortable, but I live in FL and that mattress really seemed to retain heat. I work at night and it was too warm to sleep on the mattress comfortably during the day. I know they make some with cooling gel now, and that may help. I am about to buy a sleep number bed.

I think you have to try lots of options and decide what is best for you.
Three years ago DH and I invested in a sleep number adjustable bed. I had back surgery 10 years ago and until we bought this bed, I was uncomfortable sleeping and was stiff every morning and as soon as I woke up, I had to get out of bed to move around. This bed for me was a game changer. When we travel my back bothers me on most mattresses and I can't wait to get home to sleep in my bed again!

I can't stand coils so we got an iComfort from Serta. We opted for the adjustable frame. We love it and when it comes time to replace it, we will opt for another iComfort.

We got a Serta I comfort. It's a gel memory foam and Oh my GOSH is it amazing. Very much like Tempurpedic but it doesn't use body heat to conform so it stays cool, and it was a third of the price.

I love my tempurpedic. The biggest complaint I've ever heard is the retaining heat. I'm always cold, so it's a plus for me. Tempurpedic, must have listened though, because I see commercials where they have a cooling layer now.

I hate our Sleep Number bed! It seemed to work well for me during the trial period, but I can not get a good setting on it. I wake up stiff and sore almost every morning. I can't afford anything else right now.
