We are in the beginnings of a long-anticipated project... gutting our kitchen, all the way back to the studs. I'm so excited!! We ordered all brand new cabinets, oak with a "honey-spice" finish. So warm and pretty. Now is the hard part... I need to decide on flooring and counter top designs. Anyone care to share what colors they have paired with their oak cabinets? I really thought I wanted "plank" type wood flooring, but I'm thinking maybe that is too much wood? You'd think that after all these years of wanting to re-do the kitchen, that I'd already have my mind made up but my tastes have changed a hundred times!

Can you post a pic of the cabinets? I wonder if they're antique-ish or modern or...?

I can only contribute that I have 1995 oak cabinets that I would love to replace ... can't help you Seriously, I'd love to have them painted a darker shade but we're too lazy

To answer your question about flooring, I have oak wood floors.

ETA: Ok deekaye found some pics - not the best but at least gives you an idea of what I was trying to describe. The granite counter with all the different flecks of color works well with that cabinet color. Ignore whatever mess is lurking in the background lol. My cabinets are that color - let me see if I can find a pic of the counter top - they are granite with flecks of brown/black/tiny bit of white and an occasion red that makes me think that there is spaghetti sauce splashed on it lol. NOT taking one right now bc the kitchen is a disaster. I have beige tile with some variation in the color. I'll edit if I can find a pic.

I have oak cabinets & just put in vinyl plank flooring that looks like wood. I went with a red oak for the floors so it wouldn't be matchy matchy.

I have close to that too, my countertop is the brown with black, tan and white flecks and I went with a red tile linoleum floor. This was a unplanned remodel courtesy of home owners insurance so I didn't have much money to spare. No pics, my kitchen is a mess too. .

I have cabinets that colour too (that I would also love to replace) - paired with charcoal-black countertops & white tile flooring

The happiest day in my life was when I got rid of my oak cabinets.

We do and I love them. Our floor is just sheet vinyl though. With a tile design.

I'm in the process of renovating my kitchen (Day 72!), and pulled all of the 20-year-old custom oak cabinets out. When you say "oak," I think the vast majority of us are going to picture the prevalent 90's oak. I absolutely *hated* the oak floors in my last house, but I just installed gorgeous white oak floors in the new one, and I adore them. The point is, it's the finish, not the material. Having said all that, I went with a painted door, because I don't like wood floors and wood cabinets together. (Did I mention my gorgeous new white oak floors yet?) Good luck, and enjoy your new kitchen!

We have the "90s oak". I would not do wood floors with them, because I think it would be too much wood. We currently have ceramic tile (don't do that!) and are about to replace it with vinyl flooring.

We gutted our kitchen to get rid of old oak cabinetry (went with a honey maple shaker style instead). We ended up going with dark 'wood' flooring though. It's a little broken up because most of the house is oak flooring and the den that opens to the kitchen is 14" tan tile with brown grout (laid in a brick pattern) - I know that bothers a lot of people to have the flooring different throughout the house, but we're fine with it.

Those are some good kitchens images, Dotty. I enjoy looking at a good home thread. It's time for oak to make a comeback, isn't it? IIRC it was the wood of choice when grey was last popular in the 80s. Maroon/burgundy and deep greens, purples, a lot like the jewel tones are coming back too.

Haha, thanks everyone! I knew when I posted that some people would be adverse to oak cabinets but really, they are gorgeous and having lived with dark brown builder's-grade cabinets in a small kitchen for so long, I am so excited to have a bigger kitchen with pretty, warm, oak cabinets! Our kitchen designer told us that 9/10 of the kitchens that he sells are painted cabinets (white or light) but that yes, oak/wood cabinets are making a comeback. I don't usually bother with trendy, I go for what I like and our pretty dining room table and china hutch is "right next door" so I was hoping to coordinate everything. After looking for a while, I'm thinking that wood plank flooring would be too much wood. Thanks Dottyscrapper for the link.... off to look. And those of you with messy kitchens? I don't care, I just want to see your countertops and floors! My kitchen for the next several weeks is a refrigerator, microwave and utility table next to my car in the garage, lol!

I have 1990s oak cabinets and I absolutely LOVE them!
We did our counters in black granite that had yellowish-gold flecks in it. My sink is black. The walls are a light sage green.
The floors are what was in there when we bought the house 10 years ago ... wood laminate to match the gorgeous golden oak cabinets!!
For me, it doesn't feel like too much wood. The appliances are stainless
It all seems to match ok to me...
Have fun!!!

In our old house the cabinets were dark walnut stained and the kitchen was a tiny U shaped one and no window. I hated it. It was so dark and drab so I love my light oak cabinets and open kitchen.

We have oak everything as well--trim, cabinets, doors, kitchen floor. I would love to do the floor in a vinyl that looks like tile. But I think what you choose should also "go" with the flow of the house. Is the kitchen connected to another room? If so, what is the flooring in that room? In the past I liked dark granite for the counter tops, but just heard that lighter (like cream/white) is now coming into style more than the dark. So, if I was redoing our kitchen I might look at that, but if I like the dark, I would get that.

It's not orange or gold, but a warm soft brown. We really like it, it feels warm and homey to us. And it's in beautiful condition still. We installed laminate years ago (in the kitchen & dining room) when it was still a new product, and it matches the paneling and cabinets beautifully. If I had a do over, I'd do the small kitchen in a vinyl that is lighter color and replace the "butcher block" laminate counter tops with a white or very light granite (or even a white corian, I always thought that was so pretty and clean looking). However, our budget goes to other priorities at this time. I use a couple of light colored rugs on the kitchen floor and the paint color is a creamy white. It is pleasing to our eye and we don't care that it is not trendy. Also, we chose white appliances which I think brightens the small kitchen where stainless would not.

My previous home had cabinets similar to that color. We put in the multi-colored slate tiles with that. I really loved that combo. ETA, here is a link to pictures of the kitchen in my former home

I can see where light colored appliances and countertops would offset the darker wood. We have above cabinet and under cabinet lighting and a light. At over the island/stove so that brightens it up a lot too! :-)
