I haven't owned anything besides a point and shoot and my iphone for over 15 years. Prior to that I did have a film slr but I don't even remember what kind it was or how I even used it.
My husband bought me one today because our oldest starts high school football and I was telling him I would like to be able to get some good photos.
I have a Nikon D3200. I am honestly scared to use it. He bought a 200mm lense for it too. He completely surprised me with it so I didn't have time to do research to see if it's the model I would have chosen. So far, the only feature I wish it offered is wifi. But that only seems to be available on much pricier models.
Does anyone have any tips, advice or recommendations on sites to get good advice?
I'm so excited to use it but want to learn all I can too.
Thanks!

I saw you got a lot of great help on the other board. As you take pictures make sure you post them. I'm excited to see what you take.

I bought my DSLR for the same reason! Football!
I went with the Canon T5i because I already knew Canon cameras. I went to a camera shop (National Camera in Golden Valley, MN) and told them what I wanted. I ended up buying just the body, as I wanted a better lens that overlapped the kit len's capability. I also take classes at the store when I'm in town.
I have a Tamron 18-270 mm F/3.5-6.3 and a Tamron 70-200 mm F/2.8 lens. The second lens is what I use for football and it works really, really well for night games. I've shot three games now and I'm really happy with the lens. The amount of light that it lets in is phenomenal and I love the wide aperture choices. I can single out one player to get the entire game. I can't believe how sharp the photos are, even shooting across the field. I've shot from the sidelines and from the stands and I'm happy with both perspectives. We do collage photos of the senior players for the banquet, so I try to get a mix of shots.

Michelle, those are amazing photos! My sons freshman team plays on Saturday mornings so I have a year to save up before I need a lens for night games. Thanks for sharing.

The Nikon 3200 is a fun camera. Don't be afraid to play with it! That's what's nice about digital, it gives you the freedom to take 100's of pics. Take it out & practice with fast moving objects, like your kids or pets before the first game. Use your manual mode & find the right settings. You'll love finding out what your camera can do. Pinterest has tons of tips & tricks that you can check out as well. Good luck, can't wait to see some of you work!

Amazing pictures Basket1lady. If I had to choose again I'd go for a canon next time. It's a nikon I've got and it's ok but sometimes I get a better picture just using my phone.
