My white Billy bookcases haven't yellowed but I've only had them 4 years. Not in direct sunlight either.
HTH!

I have a set of Billy book cases that are over 20 yrs old from when I was in HS. They currently hold my kids' books and no problems. Mine are birch so no experience with the white finish.

I've had Billy bookcases in black, white and birch, and the colour never changes. As an aside, I'm currently reading a book called Fifty Inventions that Shaped the Modern Economy, and the Billy bookcase is one of them.

We have two white Billy bookcases in DS's room that my Mom bought him when he was 4. He is now 28. They haven't yellowed at all-so that's 24 years! I remember when she bought them. I thought they looked huge in his room at the time and she said, "He'll grow into them quickly enough" and he sure did. He's moving into his own place soon, and I'm sure he'll take them with him. I love Billy bookcases. They hold up well. We have an additional 2 units in our finished basement. They are in a "beech" tone. It's an older tone they don't sell anymore. Warmer than birch. I wish now I'd bought 2 more of those Another thing is no matter how many books you put on them the shelves don't bend. At least on the older ones. That is before we started trading with China. Now that everything is made in China quality has gone down a bit.

Not that you asked, but I have a different IKEA bookcase, 25 years old, in a white paint or lacquer finish and it's still white. DH and I both amazed how long we've had it and how well it's held up.

I have Billy bookcases we bought 33 years ago. They are stilled filled with books. We have 3 tall ones and a short one. They are birch and have held up great! I think they are the only pieces of furniture that we still have from when we first got married.

Can I piggy back a question?
Does anyone have the ones with Glass doors... how difficult are they to put together?

We bought, thinking it was not long term furniture, the kind you get in a hurry as you merge apartments. Twenty five years later it's still doing the job, despite multiple moves, and kid use.

I know people usually criticize Ikea furniture for being cheap and poor construction but in my experience it is really sturdy and well made. (But maybe it depends on the builder 😜)
