www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/explaining-the-fbi-probe-and-the-corruption-scandal-rocking-college-basketball/I apologize if I missed a post on this, but WOW! Louisville, Auburn, Oklahoma State, USC, Arizona State ..... assistant coaches and reps for Addidas have been arrested, and supposedly there is more to come. Basically, they shoe reps were funneling bribes to players and their families in return for agreeing to sign with Addidas when they went pro. Why is this such a big deal? For one, the NCAA has no subpeana power when it investigates, so schools can stonewall and not cooperate and eventually get away with cheating. But this time, the Feds are involved, and they aren't playing around. Charges have been filed, and I predict we will have a full choir singing soon as those involved start pointing fingers. Also, because of the payments to the players, the IRS can get involved with tax fraud charges if the money was never reported. Players rarely testify against coaches during an NCAA investigation, in part because they are often out of school by the time the investigation is underway. If they are facing tax fraud charges, they may be willing to talk. For now this just involves Addidas and basketball. I'm sure they will be looking at Nike and Under Armor before this is finished. I think this is more widespread in basketball than football, mostly because of the AAU circuit and because shoe endorsements are sort of a "basketball thing." It won't shock me if this extends a bit into NCAA Football, though.

I was watching ESPN this morning and first heard about it then. I'm not surprised. This dirty stuff probably goes on more than we realize, but certainly not to this extent. I see that they already cut Rick Pitino loose at Louisville.

Yes, Pitino is on unpaid leave but won't officially be fired for 10 days per the terms of his contract. Tom Jericho, their AD, is on paid leave and most likely gone as well.
I don't expect their football coach to stay if Jurich is fired.
And on top of all of that, U of L is on probation with its academic accreditation.
My BIL works for U of L, and my nephew is in his junior year there. They are sooooo upset by all of this!

And they will likely be banned from games.

It will be interesting to see where this goes. I hate to see Pitino's career end this way, but it's hard to justify what has been going on in Louisville. Adidas might end up being the spoiler to college sports.

Brutal.
I'm trying to follow this story but I'm in Canada so it's not as big here. Would this only be men's teams that are likely implicated? Only big sports like basketball & football?
The reason I'm asking is because I'm a big fan of women's soccer, both the USWNT and the NWSL. US athletes now get drafted into the NWSL via a college connected draft. Of course, some players do skip college but not many. And although the majority of players who get on to the senior NT go through the lower ranks of US teams, it's becoming more common for players to get looks as a result of their NWSL play.

I think it happens and they just got caught. It’s illegal so I am curious to see what other schools/coaches are involved in the future.

This is a real shame.
I know the "dream" is for DS to play NCAA basketball (and we are in Canada so it is a big dream) but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have the academics to back it up. But even so, this is a big deal for our basketball boy & his pals.
Our coach is a huge Kentucky fan - so this will really hit him.

Pitino is a piece of shit and I feel bad for the innocent people involved in that program that he's brought so much bad press their way.

What I think is interesting about the FBI's involvement is that the guilty parties are finally going to be held responsible and pay the price for their crimes. I am sick and tired of coaches running a dirty program and then when the NCAA becomes involved, the coach leaves and goes on to bigger and better things. The school is left to deal w/ the NCAA sanctions. I'm also tired of all the greedy families taking advantage of their gifted kids.
I realize the schools are not going to get off scot free. I'm sure the NCAA will do its own investigation and the schools will probably be sanctioned (and rightfully so). I just think it is about time there is some punishment for those who actually do the dirty deed.

Pitino coached Kentucky decades ago, left for the NBA, and then came to Louisville. University of Kentucky fans hate him. If the skills are there, grades are generally worked on. Perhaps your day might find a junior college in the US that is a good basketball showcase. Good luck to you both. Kids want to play, but college spoerts are pretty brutal, and they leave little time for anything including class work.

I am not really understanding why anyone is shocked. With money and acclaim comes greed for more money and more acclaim, then a sense of invincibility. These sports and their staff are worshipped and treated like gods. Of course, they think they can get away with illegal behaviors. Of course.
At least no children were molested this time.

I'm not much of a sports fan but for some reason I love sports documentaries. I recently watched one about the 'professionalization' of youth basketball. I believe Adidas was one of the camp 'owners', and I think they talk a little in the documentary about how they make these sketchy 'agreements' with these kids for sponsorship once they are done with college and have entered the NBA. I thought it was really interesting (and kind of sad too), and seems very relevant to these current events.
Eta: the documentary is called "at all costs"

I would expect the investigation to eventually include UK and any other school that consistently pulls in the top-rated 5-star players and the "one-and-done" players. Those are the players that have value for the shoe companies, and it would be naive to think only Adidas is involved. I believe that somewhere in the FBI documents there was a record of one of the shoe company reps saying that they had to move fast on a kid before their rival got involved. I'm not sure if that meant rival school or rival company. If that rep was talking about a rival company, it probably: means Nike or Under Armor. If other companies were involved, it will come out soon. ETA: I am not suggesting UK has participated in illegal activity. I am just saying that they probably will be investigated due to the high numbers of players they get that fit the profile desired by the shoe companies.

I am proud of the law enforcement who infiltrated these rings of fraud and corruption to ferret it out and bring it to light.
I wish we had more of this kind of operation aimed at "white collar" crimes.

The Washington state university football coach recieves an almost 3 million dollar salary, and the combine salary of his staff 3 million. I find this distasteful since none of the teaching staff doesn't make anywhere near that.

I think Rick Pitino is a piece of shit and it irritates me that there are innocent people involved with his shittiness.

I agree. i don't think WVU (my alma mater) will get sucked into this mess for basketball. Bob Huggins has been pretty upfront about not jumping through AAU hoops to get top talent. He has done quite well with 3- and 4-star players that he can coach in his system, and I don't think he has ever signed a 5- star player while coaching in Morgantown. He did have AAU contacts at other schools where he coached, but that has not been the case since he returned home. Some of our fans who have been bi*ching about our lack of 5-star talent are singing a different tune this week. That's not to say that we have a perfectly clean program. You never know what happens behind the scenes, but if we wer involved in this scheme, we really su*ked at it LOL.

I don't think there's anything 'shocking' as far as this going on in the college sports world. It's happened forever. I just think it's a bigger deal this time because the FBI is involved - the NCAA doesn't have the means that the FBI does (or a convict ready to sing like a canary to reduce his own time), which should blow open a lot more doors. I'm interested to see how it all plays out.

WOW! I had heard about this but not all the details. I was secretly happy about Rick as I have hated the way he would whine and cry at the sidelines of games. Been to one too many Kentucky/Arkansas games.
Anyway, my DD is in grad school and is in Sport Admin program. She is working with the compliance dept and all of their "uniform" stuff they wear on game days comes from Adidas. I will have to ask her about this and see if they are discussing it. She is in the football program.

I live in Kentucky and this has been the talk of the state. I am not a Louisville fan myself (I bleed Kentucky blue) but hate to see Pitino go out like this. I believe he should've been gone after the hooker scandal myself though. I hope that Kentucky doesn't get caught up in this mess...I have no doubt Calipari is being investigated though. My hope is that due to his somewhat nefarious past he knows he's been watched closely since he arrived at UK and has conducted himself appropriately. We shall see.
