I really like what you did. Apparently islands are "out of fashion", according to an article in a home magazine.
Too bad that you need to move.

I think it looks great! I definitely like the new layout better as well as the larger tile. As for the bathroom upgrades, some people have no clue how real estate works. You either get EVERYTHING updated and pay through the nose, or pay a decent price for a 20 year old house and have a bit of leeway to change things like faucets and light fixtures yourself. If your master bath has really dated wallpaper, I would think taking a weekend to strip it and paint the walls would be worth the $$-- many people can't see past bad wallpaper or bright gold fixtures. It drives me crazy how so many people on House Hunters focus on stupid stuff like an ugly chandelier. Dude. You can get rid of it. You're not signing a contract stating you must have that for the next 20 years. We didn't change a thing in our house (owned it for almost 30 years) and got close to $400,000 for it!! I'm sure that had we done $10,000 worth of work, we could have gotten much more, but it was pretty amazing to get that much!!!!! Pays to be in a great location on a great piece of property. To the OP: Your kitchen was beautiful before!! I would have been pretty happy with it (minus the popcorn ceiling and peeling cabinets tho!!). Ditching the island was great--it's so spacious now. But you did a great job with it all. It's gorgeous!!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I hope it sells soon.
The old kitchen was *bad*. You can't tell in the pictures, but the cabinets were in bad shape. Peeling, doors didn't always shut, and the floor was vinyl and torn up in two spots. Just a mess. It was weirdly lit, and kind of dingy in person.
We've had some odd feedback from our two showings.. one said updates were nice but needed more, and the other said there were too many unfinished projects. I have no idea what that means.. my master bathroom is still 1994 ugly, but the entire rest of the house has been done. I don't know what they mean by "unfinished", unless they wanted a 100% remodelled, needs no more work kind of house. I have no idea. We've renovated the kitchen, kids' bathroom, added hardwood, redid the entire front door and foyer window, etc. It's as good as it's going to get right now.
Oh well..onwards. It just takes the right buyer and we're going to be good.

That looks amazing! I love the changes you made. I wouldn't have thought to remove the island. You're right. So much more functional and open. Good luck selling!

Love the renovation. What are your plans after you sell it? We have our house on the market right now and we did some renovating to prepare for the sale. We painted the whole house inside, completely did one bathroom, updated the tile in the other two bathrooms and put new carpet in the whole house and so far a couple of the feedbacks that we got said the same thing, "needs too much updating." I presume it's because our kitchen still has formica counter tops instead of granite. It gets discouraging to hear feedback like that after all the time, effort and money that you've put into it to fix it up to that point.
Good luck. I hope you sell quickly.
(Love your new avatar picture too!)

The people who made weird comments (re: "there are too many unfinished projects," "it's nice but it needs more..." are just people looking for a price reduction. When we just sold our house, we got similar comments. Very strange! But then the same people came back and tried to negotiate the price down!
