That list is weird and makes no sense. The notion that a well-bred Rottweiler costs a minimum of $7,000 is lunacy. That's just one of the bizarre things.

That list is weird. I thought this was going to be a list of most expensive dogs to OWN - not to acquire. I just knew my dog (GSD) was going to be on the list. I just spent $2500 in hospital and vet bills 2 weeks ago!

Thanks for the list, it was a very interesting read. I had a chow chow given to me in my very early 20's as a puppy. He'd had a cat scratch his left eye so bad it had to be removed. That dog was my everything for 13 years, I see why it made the list of top 10.

This is interesting, but I'm sceptical about GSDs and Rottweilers being in there. Yes, perhaps dogs from exalted pedigree lines are going to cost top dollar, but not all of them. One of my neighbours has a beautiful Akita, and she certainly didn't pay over £1000 for him.

Not sure how Frenchies escaped that list. Expensive to acquire AND own. But he's worth every penny and dollar...

my dogs are mutts and they are expensive as hell to maintain. and i say that in the most loving way. LOL.
four beds in the den (for two dogs!), two in the bedroom, a bed each of the other rooms, grooming that cost more than my hair color, salmon based food to maintain their coats, treats, toys, vet visits, etc.........

I agree with the others--while these dogs can be expensive from an exclusive, pure bred breeder, many can be found in any shelter. It's like saying a bottle of pinot is the most expensive wine because someone bought a million dollar bottle at some point.

I agree this list is ridiculous. Almost no one pays such exalted prices for any of those breeds. The Tibetan Mastiff probably costs a TON, but others just don't. I have been wanting a GSD for sometime now....more specifically a longhair GSD. The place I'm looking at which is a top USA breeder charges 2K for the average dog. If you want them trained to be guard dogs they will cost you about 10K.

That list is not reliable. It does not list the English Bulldog. My vet told me I am the kind of pet owner vets love because my kind of dog is what sends his kid's to ivy league school. Yeah, my vet is a bit of a smartass but he is a great guy and takes really good care of my Harley.

Where on earth did they get the dollar figures for this list? I know plenty of people with German Shepherds, Rottweilers and Samoyeds and I can assure you that none of them paid $7000+.

Benjamin, by pibble mix is pretty expensive. I'd hate to add up all the shoes, bags, technology, he's chewed up.

My friend bought a papillon for $1,000 many years ago and I thought she was crazy. I love my dogs but most have been free (rescued off the street.)

I have met people with such big dogs that they had to buy bigger vehicles to transport them around, Irish Wolfhound and Newfoundland to be precise. Now that is expensive!

either prices have gone up a ton in the last few years or that list is bullshit.
DH and I had Rottweilers for years and almost got another about 7 yeas ago but the kids begged for a newfoundland dog. We paid $600-800 when we first got Rotties and I think 7 years ago the breeder wanted $1000. These were for responsible, ethical breeders who show their dogs in confirmation and obedience

I have met people with such big dogs that they had to buy bigger vehicles to transport them around, Irish Wolfhound and Newfoundland to be precise. Now that is expensive! We were eating on the patio of a restaurant and a car pulled up right next to us. It was a small hatchback (I think it was a Subaru Impreza). Anyway, she pops the hatch and out climbs this gigantic Newfoundland. It literally took up the entire back of the car!

My DH wants an Akita. I'm thinking not! My SIL has only ever had rescue Akita's. She has had 6 over the years. She always has 2 of them. Some have come to her broken which is surprising since they are such an expensive dog. They are wonderful companions. If you want one, I would NOT buy one from a breeder. There are plenty of them through rescues.

I agree, this list is really skewed and makes no sense. There are more expensive breeds than the ones listed here and the amounts are totally unrealistic.

I really love dogs, and would adore a sweet one. I'm sure I'd love your MIL's dog, except now this obnoxious one gives the whole breed a bad rep for me. I have to grit my teeth when I see a picture of one.
