I know this question has been asked and answered quite a few times. If you do a search, you'll be able to see all the previous recommendations. Have fun - NYC is awesome!

A friend just asked this on FB and posted the combined list...
THis is as good a place to start as any..
Activities • Walk the Highline (ping pong at the pub at the end) • Broadway Show (Latin History for Morons, Come from Away, Hamilton, Carole King Musical, Dear Evan Hansen, Harry Potter) • Off-Broadway Show (In & Of Itself) • Walk Brooklyn Bridge at Sunset from Brooklyn • Washington Square Park • Walk Little Italy and Chinatown • The Cloisters • Central Park • 911 Memorial Site/Tour • Empire State Building • Terra Blues • Battery Park • Grand Central Station • Bryant Park • NY Public Library • Lincoln Center • Coney Island • Big Onion Tour of LES • CBGB Site • The Knitting Factory • Woolworth Building Tour • Comedy Cellar
Art/Learning • MOMA • The Met • Tenement Museum • Guggenheim • Chelsea Galleries • Whitney Museum • Rockwood Music Hall
Shopping • John Derian Company • Chelsea Market • ABC Carpet & Home • No. 6
Eating • Spotted Pig (hamburger at the bar) • Cocotte NYC (SoHo) • Wo Hop (Chinatown) • Alice’s Tea Cup • Breakfast or Dinner in Williamsburg • Nobu • Russ & Daughters, Economy Candy • Yonah Schummils (knish) • Little Branch Speakeasy (West Village) • Bagel Buffet (NoHo) • Magnolia Bakery (cupcakes) • Two Little Red Hens (cupcakes)
The Whitney, Chelsea galleries & Chelsea Market are adjacent to the Highline so you could easily make a day out of that neighborhood. I recommend the Highline in the morning when it’s not so crowded.
The NY Public Library neighbors Bryant Park and is around the corner from Grand Central Station and is walking distance from MOMA.
For great up to date NYC listings check out TimeOut NYC, The Village Voice, and New York Mag.

That list is awesome! Thank you! It is the first trip my husband and I have taken without kids and not business related in 27 years of marriage! We are going next week. No real budget, but I don't want a 600 dollar steak dinner either! Just bought tickets to Wicked and Book of Morman.

Book stuff ahead of time would be my tip - to avoid standing in line.

Have fun - don't be afraid to try the neighborhood restaurants - they will generally have better food than any chain related place or most hotel restaurants. Most have menus posted outside the door. Most of the places I am familiar with are on the Upper East Side in my dad's old neighborhood(90's and Park/Lexington), and most travelers don't get up that far.
take your walking shoes! You will walk everywhere, much easier to get around. Be prepared for any weather, it can go from cold to warm in a day, a small folding umbrella is good too.
Again - have fun

Don't be afraid of the Subway. Download the app, and people will help you.

I would add Katz's Deli to that list of restaurants. I'm counting down the minutes until we visit my daughter for NYU's Parents Weekend in a few weeks and can eat one of their knishes.

Any suggestions for good restaurants in this neighborhood, specifically for Sunday brunch? I'm going next weekend and we're staying in the Upper East Side.

I've never heard of it but a quick perusal of that menu shows there is a lot of fish and fish related food items! I'll bet my friends would like it though.

I have a question for those in the know... DH and I are going to NYC Dec 27 - Dec 31 and want to see a Broadway show. How far in advance should we buy tickets? We were there last year at that time. We had some tickets in advance... hello Hamilton waited 10 months to see it. And we booked some right before we left. 2nd Row The Color Purple. Best money I ever spent on a show. And we did some day of tickets. It really depends on what you want to see and how badly you want to see it. I download the TKTS app and the TiX Today app's and start watching to see what is regularly on the app. You will be there at one of the busiest times so if there is something you really want to see buy it in advance.. if there are a lot of things you want to see and you don't have a strong opinion on one over another you will find some discounted tickets right up to the day of the show.

OP--my favorite is Cafe Luxembourg. Not outrageously expensive, beloved by locals, very NY. You might see some celebrities.

The best tip I got about going to New York was using Starbucks if I needed a bathroom. It can sometimes be hard to find a public bathroom. But there are tons of Starbucks and the majority have bathrooms you can use and you don't have to purchase anything. I think there was only one I went to that didn't have a bathroom.
Also, we never ate at a chain restaurant when we were there. Yelp is your friend. There were several times we didn't know where to go so I yelped somewhere and we were never dissappointed. I was more disappointed by some of the recommendations of friends.
IMO Ellen's Stardust Diner is not worth the money. The food was mediocre and so was the show I thought. Andit waa expensive. Grays Papaya came recommended but none of us really thought they were that good. We ate several meals in Chinatown at a hole in the wall place called Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles. Cheap and oh so good!
Have fun, it's a great city. Don't get dismayed by the subway, it's the best way to get around but it takes a day or two to get the hang of it. I forget the name, but there's a great app you can download that's helpful. Plus New Yorkers aren't as mean as they'd like you to think, everyone was very helpful.

If you are there during a busy season and plan on going to the Empire State Building I highly recommend the VIP tour that skips the lines both up and going down. It can save you hours in wait time.

I’m finding more and more Starbucks are closing their bathrooms to the public—but not all. My favorite NYC public bathroom is in Bryant Park. Piped in classical music, an attendant who does traffic control and keeps things tidy, marble countertops and flowers. And Bryant Park itself is nice to hang out in.
