I just did probably the most impulsive thing I've ever done & booked a trip to Maui over Christmas break. Normally a trip of this size/expense would be researched & planned for at least six months, but I found a great airfare and we decided to go for it.
Any can't miss suggestions? We'll be staying in Kihei.
And it's probably a long shot, but I've got two specific questions. One - would it be a terrible idea to try to drive to Hana on Christmas Day? It seems like there might be less traffic, but maybe things wouldn't be open/available? Two - I need to find an easy-ish and safe route to run 7 miles by myself. I'd prefer to not run on the highway or somewhere really isolated. Any tips?

Yay for you! I have no idea about your run but regarding Hana on Christmas Day - There is nothing there to be open anyway. (except a hamburger shop in Hana) Pack a lunch and some drinks and it will be like any other Hana Highway day. And once you get to Hana, KEEP DRIVING. There is a great hike though a real bamboo forest to a beautiful waterfall. Pipiwai trail to Waimoku Falls

Pipiwai trail to Waimoku Falls It's been several years since I've been here, but Hana itself is pretty remote IIRC, not much there other than scenery. The other thing to be aware of is that the road itself is pretty bumpy and in places VERY narrow, and some car rental companies don't want people taking their vehicles on it. Enjoy your trip, Maui is one of my all time favorite places on earth!

I agree w/ the other posters about packing a picnic lunch for the trip to Hana. The Pipiwai Trail is awesome.
With regard to your run, I'd ask the hotel concierge about a safe route. You could also ask about it on trip advisor.
Have a great trip!

Kihei has sidewalks so if you can't find any other options, you'll at least have that.
The only things you'll be missing if you do Hana on Christmas day are things like Aunty Sandy's banana bread or Coconut Glen's ice cream. Not sure if the arboretum or botanic gardens will be open but those aren't critical stops either. There are a few state park and public bathrooms that should be open and once you make it to Haleakala, the bathrooms will be open there even if the Visitor Center is closed. Definitely pack a picnic and plenty of water.

And the trip advisor Maui forum is a great place to ask about places to run near Kihei. It's a very active forum so someone will have an answer for you.

South of Kihei is the Wailea resort area which has a beautiful path along the beach for running or walking. It looks like you can start in South Kihei and then connect with the Wailea beach path. I found this blog which has directions: www.mauibeachblankets.com/blog/2016/02/the-best-running-routes-on-maui/ Look at the one that says South Kihei to Makena. Makena is at the south end of the Wailea beach path. It sounds like a wonderful trip!

Now you have me dreaming! What airline had the great fare? Thanks for the link to the blog - very helpful! American had the deal, BUT the low fare was only on a few flights on a couple of different days. Just lucky we could go then!
