I am on the fellowship team at my church.
We want to create something like 'meet ups' for people who have similar interests. It's basically about facilitating people getting to know each other, strengthen existing connections, maybe make new friends, meet new people, etc.
We've done things like host games nights at the church, we did a baked potato bar lunch (thank you to the theatre moms who told me about that! It was a big hit!), we have a yearly camping trip at a campground about 20 minutes from town, Christmas dinner... you get the idea.
We'd like, though, to not always come up with all the ideas, choose the dates, etc, so much as just help people link together who might have something in common. For example, for years about 3 of us have talked about renting a bus and going over to Vancouver to go to IKEA... basically seeing who's interested & organizing it and going for the day. And it never gets done. So we could maybe help that to happen. And we're looking at reserving some tickets for a Christmas performance in town.
So we are trying to figure out two things:
1) We need to come up with a list of things people might be interested or figure out a way to find out what folks are interested in. Or both.
2)We need to figure out a way to link folks. Someone wanted to use the bulletin board. You'd have a column for, say, folks who are interested in meeting for games. And a column for people who are interested in a book club. Or movie nights. Or bowling. Or a walking group. You get the idea...
We were going to move forward with using our bulletin board, but then we realized we wouldn't want contact info on anything posted there, because our church is used by other groups during the week. We could, of course, take the sheets down off the board on Monday morning/Sunday as we leave. Or we could just have sign up sheets at our Welcome Centre counter area.
I think a FB group would be terrific but there's resistance. I would do it as a closed/private group. I also think we need to use multiple methods of reaching out to people.
So what are some ideas your church has used to help people connect with folks who have similar interests?
TIA! We have a meeting tomorrow at 4:30 pacific time. I meant to post this a few days ago & I got busy.
