If you want something on the lighter side, go for Rhys Bowen's "Royal Spyness" series.

I love Harry Bosch, Greg Iles and John Hart.
Three that I haven't seen mentioned:
1. John Katzenbach. He has written tons over the years. Just Cause was a movie and was amazing. Red 1-2-3 was also exceptional. I really liked almost everything I have ever read of his.
2. RJ Ellory. Oh. So. Wonderful My favorites are A Quiet Vendetta, A Quiet Belief in Angels and Candlemoth.
3. Dennis Lehane has a few as well. Mystic River and then his series starting with The Given Day. Wonderful! Disclaimer: I hated the book Shutter Island and thought it was one of the worse books I've ever read.

I just watched the Shetland series on Netflix, and they are based on the books by Ann Cleeves. Good police drama/detective mystery stories. I think I would like her books a lot. Set in the Shetland Islands

Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse novels are good.
Some of my favorites for driving are more in the action adventure genre: the Covert One series (sold under Robert Ludlum's name but written by others after his death) and Steve Berry books with Cotton Malone as the main character ---read both series in order to fully understand the back story.
Also Clive Cussler books-I've read them all, and the newer ones (past 10 years) are better than the earliest books, IMO. He has several co writers lately and a couple of different series, most of which are fast paced adventures.

I suggest anything by Jo Nesbo-but in particular The Snowman-it's being made into a movie, can't wait!! I also like the alex delaware novels by Jonathan Kellerman, and the Harry Bosch novels by Michael Connelly I just started reading Jo Nesbo- finished The Bat last night. It was set in Australia and although reviews said it wasn't as good as later books, I always like to read the series from the beginning . I quite enjoyed it and thought MOST of the descriptions of Sydney were quite accurate. However, no way has there ever been a Great White shark at the Sydney aquarium!!! There is a salt water crocodile which could have easily been used in the story instead. I will be reading the next book very soon- need to get to the Snowman before I see the movie. Corinne
