Even though I've been scrapping for years, I've never given a lot of thought to ink pads - always made do with the cheap ones at HL. But I am getting more interested in stamping and would like to find some good quality ink. I'm not really interested in doing any kind of watercolor, blending, misting, embossing, etc. - just something that is going to make a clear impression and remain stable on the page over time (I've had bad experiences with some inks soaking in and leaving oily marks on my paper).
I'm looking at the Lawn Fawn dye inks, and I also really like the colors of the Tim Holtz distress inks and oxides - but there again I'm not looking to do mixed media, so I don't know if his line would be appropriate for just basic stamping.
So to sum up my little essay, I'm searching for a clean stamping ink that won't turn "oily," and that will be good for just basic use. Any ideas are welcome!

For basic stamping, I use Memento Tuxedo Black ink for stamped images that I want to color in. It's perfect for coloring and the stamp lines never bleed in. I've also had good luck with Lawn Fawn. Simon Says stamp ink pads also work well. Stampin up ink pads are great too.

Archival inks are a good choice, since they were designed to be permanent and not fade over the years. Stampin' Up inks are not permanent, although I'm not sure about their black ink. The formula for that has been changed. The Palette inks (including Lawn Fawn and other similar brands) would be good, as well as Memento.

My favorite inks are Color Box (pigment). I love the "cat's eye" applicator, in particular - makes it so easy to get into tight spaces. I've had good luck with longevity of the stamped image, too.

I use Versafine onyx black to get a really crisp impression. If I'm being honest, I don't particularly love dye inks. But I do love pigment inks for color. Sometimes they take a little time to dry, but I feel like I get a much better impression with them than I do dye inks.

I've tried a lot of different kinds. Each type of ink has it's pros and cons. A lot depends on what you want to use to color the images. If you use markers or watercolors, you want an ink that won't run or bleed when you color with anything wet. If you use colored pencils, any ink will do (unless you use watercolor pencils or a blending solution). I use Momento mostly these days, but I have colorbox pigment inks, Close to My Heart dye inks ("juicier" than many dye inks), and sometimes archival inks. It mostly depends on my project. For starters, I suggest Momento inks. I feel they are the most versatile, regardless of what you use to color the stamped designs.

For what you want, Stazon. It's a little more pricey, but very dependable and quick drying. Comes in over 20 colors. STAZON TIP; I use 2 pieces of foam tape to adhere the inner lid to the outer lid. It removes a lot of frustration.

My favourite black ink is Versafine - it dries quickly and won't smudge and is light and fade resistant.
I don't know much about Lawn Fawn inks. My favourite dye inks are Altenew crisp dye inks which give a great image. I do more stamping in cardmaking but also use them for layouts as well.

Can anyone offer a comparison between the Stamping UP inks and the Lawn Fawn? Thanks
