Trump: 'Fake NBC News' nuke story 'pure fiction'
BY JORDAN FABIAN - 10/11/17 09:56 AM EDT President Trump on Wednesday forcefully denied an NBC News report that he asked to dramatically expand the U.S. nuclear arsenal and suggested he might pull the network’s broadcasting license.
“Fake @nbcnews made up a story that I wanted a ‘tenfold’ increase in our U.S. nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!” he tweeted. In a subsequent tweet, the presiden wrote: “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!”
The news network on Wednesday reported the president’s request, which it said shocked top military brass and senior administration officials. The request was what reportedly led Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to call Trump a “moron.” A State Department spokesperson later denied Tillerson used that word to insult Trump. At a July meeting at the Pentagon, the president said he wanted to expand the country’s nuclear capabilities after seeing data showing the U.S. weapons stockpile decreasing over the past 50 years, according to the report. Top military officials reportedly told him that such a buildup would be prohibitively expensive and violate international disarmament treaties. Trump’s threat against NBC alarmed some media figures and policy makers, who viewed it as an attempt to infringe on free-speech rights. Others said stripping a broadcast license is not feasible.
“Not how it works,” tweeted Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democratic member of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). thehill.com/homenews/administration/354888-trump-fake-nbc-news-nuke-story-pure-fictionNot feasible, but tell that to he wrote can only get things done by Executive Order. Would he try that?? One wonders!!!

I hate him. Nothing surprises me anymore except that there are still supporters of his.

A lot of things frighten me about him.. I mean A LOT of things. But I hope that people are deeply disturbed by things like this (well the supposed statement and his reaction). The fact that he thinks he can completely disregard the power of the first amendment and go after the NFL or any news network in some back door way by going after their license or their finances is pure crazy. That is not how this country works period. And to continue to make these kinds of threats... via the oh so respectable platform of Twitter nonetheless... should have everyone's attention regardless of party.
ETA- and I am sure that by tomorrow SHS will be scolding us all for not having a sense of humor and realizing that this was a joke or an exaggeration to make a point. Because anytime something he says goes over like a lead balloon it is because we are all too stupid to know what he really meant.

He can't hide behind his press secretary and the other evil minions when he is tweeting. It reminds us daily that he is an unstable, incompetent, unqualified piece of crap.

So all of the people who said "don't worry, he's totally not a fascist" - at what point does it become OK to start worrying that he might be a fascist?

The news network on Wednesday reported the president’s request, which it said shocked top military brass and senior administration officials. ^^^ is no one telling him that this sort of thing is an ETHICS VIOLATION?? NO ONE?? Shouldn't there be a hearing on this, or a reprimand, or something? I really want to hear that SOMEONE (in the government) has said "Mr. President, YOU CAN'T DO THAT." Not feasible, but tell that to he wrote can only get things done by Executive Order. Would he try that?? One wonders!!! I totally believe that he would try this sort of thing-- he already has, with his stupid travel ban.

He is also saying he will use the EO to repeal the ACA.

So all of the people who said "don't worry, he's totally not a fascist" - at what point does it become OK to start worrying that he might be a fascist? They buy into his "fake news" bs so they probably are ok with him taking the license away from a network they see as "fake".

I wish that he would void the license that he has to make my head explode daily! Fake news is nothing compared to his musings about who and what he should control.

Donald Trump just issued a direct threat to the free and independent mediaCNN Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large Updated 8:56 PM ET, Wed October 11, 2017 Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump has said a lot of bad things about the media since he started running for president two-plus years ago. He's suggested that the press doesn't really like America. He has said the media is the "enemy of the American people." He has repeatedly called journalists the "most dishonest" people. He has worked to paint news stories he doesn't like as "fake" -- and claimed he created that term. But he's never gone as far as he did on Wednesday morning when he tweeted this: "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!" Trump, like a dog on a bone, was still on the issue Wednesday night. "Network news has become so partisan, distorted and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked," he tweeted. "Not fair to public!" What Trump is suggesting here is that the Federal Communications Commission needs to examine its licensing procedures for major news networks because what they are reporting is not to his liking. The coverage isn't positive enough for Trump, so he wants some sort of punitive action doled out.
At a photo-op with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump added that "it is frankly disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write" This is, simply put, the stuff of authoritarian governments. Democracy is built on the free and independent press. If/when a president or any leader seizes the ability to control the news media, democracy dies. Before we go any further, it's important to note that this, like many of Trump's threats, is an empty one. The idea of the FCC rescinding broadcast licenses to major networks because the President says the coverage of him is fake (it's not) is outlandish. And likely impossible. (Read this piece by CNNMoney's Oliver Darcy and Brian Stelter to understand why.. money.cnn.com/2017/10/11/media/trump-nbc-licenses-tweet/index.html .) Ajit Pai, the chairman of the FCC, has been quite clear that he sees no politics in his job. "My job is to not to be a political actor," Pai said at an open FCC hearing back in March when asked about the idea of "fake news." "It is simply to be somebody at the FCC who, as I said, is administering the laws of the United States. I'm simply not going to wade into that kind of political debate." That Trump's threat won't come to pass doesn't render it meaningless, however. That Trump would even threaten such a thing suggests he doesn't understand (or doesn't want to understand) the most basic of democratic concepts.Trump's view of the world is derived from his time as the face/boss of a business. Everyone works for him. He can fire anyone at any time. What he says goes. If you don't like it, you can quit. That is not, of course, how elected office works. Trump can't tell House members and senators what to do because they have their own bosses -- we call them constituents -- all around the country. And he can't tell the media what to cover or how to cover it because, well, this is a democracy and -- per my point above -- that's not how any of this works. It's not just this threatening tweet -- or his long crusade against "fake" news -- that suggests Trump doesn't get that the media isn't working for him. Just imagine what Hannity would have done if Obama had said that Fox News should lose its license for biased reporting.

He can't hide behind his press secretary and the other evil minions when he is tweeting. It reminds us daily that he is an unstable, incompetent, unqualified piece of crap. He absolutely is. But almost a year later, he's still there, doing more and more damage every day. So that reminder has done nothing at all to fix things. I just don't get how, in this day and age, it's even POSSIBLE that he's still president.

My feeling more and more is that he says these things (like wanting to build the nuclear arsenal) and then doesn’t remember because of dementia. In his mind, it never happened and is “fake news.”

In his mind, it never happened and is “fake news.” Somewhere along the line I thought of that too, but I guess it wandered away from my mind........... Although I am old and retired, is that a good excuse? Truthfully it really is hard to keep up with all his escapades, THAT'S my real excuse!!

Let's not forget Trump is also the guy who used to call reporters pretending to be his own publicist and expected them to print every word.
I believe he has been deranged for a long, long time. But his wealth allowed him to continue to function.

In his mind, it never happened and is “fake news.” I really wish I could buy in to this theory. It seems less dangerous and terrifying than any other explanation for his insanity. If this ended up being the case, that would be nice. I just honestly think he's ignorant and horrible enough to mean and remember every single word that comes from his ugly hateful lying face.
