Fascinating, so many questions. BBC Researchers in Sweden have found Arabic characters woven into burial costumes from Viking boat graves. The discovery raises new questions about the influence of Islam in Scandinavia, writes journalist Tharik Hussain. They were kept in storage for more than 100 years, dismissed as typical examples of Viking Age funeral clothes. But a new investigation into the garments - found in 9th and 10th Century graves - has thrown up groundbreaking insights into contact between the Viking and Muslim worlds. Patterns woven with silk and silver thread have been found to spell the words "Allah" and "Ali". www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-41567391

Thanks for sharing.
It doesn't surprise me. The vikings travelled to the other continents, and traded with different cultures. They worked as bodyguards of the Byzantine emperor and must have come in contact with muslims in Istanbul. In the mosque/cathedral Hagia Sophia one can see rune inscriptions from this periode.

oooh! More medieval history! This is a good pea day for me! thank you Strictly speaking; no. The Middle Ages didn't start until after Christianity was ...ehh.. "introduced.... so in Scandinavia, the medieval period starts 1030 in Norway and even later in Sweden.

I hate them so, so much! And did you see the knitted sweater for the Alpine team for the winter olympics? It had the Tyr rune on it, so Dale had to pull it because it was racist?

Truth be told, this brings very little, if any, new understanding. Christian artifacts have been found in burial mounds nd hoards for a long time, the same goes for Arabic coins. All it shows, is that, directly or indirectly, that person had contact with someone from the Islamic world. And we know they did, since the Arabic world was the largest comsumer of slaves in that time period. Silk was a precious commodity, and the letters on them would just have looked ornamental to a people who had almost no written language.

I just read an article about how viking enthusiasts are trying to take back the viking symbols. I hpoe they succeed. I wish that Dale hadn't pulled the sweater pattern. With 10.000 people wearing it, it could have changed the new negative interpretation of the Tyr rune.

Ami thinking of thevsring rune?

That researcher has kind of a bad reputation (jumps to conclusions). Some of my uber geeky reenactor friends get twitchy when she comes out with stuff.

But you get a lot of nasty looks and remarks when you wear Mjolnir. The christians are still very good at demonising us, and those neoNazis certainly don't make it any easier.

Looking into it, her timing is off too - the grave it came from was from the 10th century. Kufic text was around from the 7th century but square Kufic didn't pop up until the 12th or 13th centuries.

Interestingly, this popped up in a FB group today, and I stated, as I have above, why claiming the person was muslim, might be jumping to conclusions. Man, did they try to rip me to shreds! Racist, islamophobic refugee-hater was among the nicer things they said before the post was deleted.
