It was great! Tench was hilarious at times with that dry wit. I just wonder if the Park City killer is Dennis Rader- the BTK murderer? And there better be a 2nd season!

I must be the only person on the planet that absolutely hates this show. I was so anxious for it to come on from the moment I first heard about it, but I had to shut it off...I thought it was terrible. I graduated high school in 1977, so it's not that I'm unfamiliar with the time setting, I just think the acting sucks.

I'm struggling through episode 1, that scene in the club with the subtitles...urgh! The dialogue is so forced and cringy.

I didn't even know this was a series! I have read all of John Douglas' books and Google tells me that in the series the character called 'Holden Ford' (hard to believe they couldn't come up with a better name than that!) is based on Douglas - so I'll definitely be checking this out...thanks The name Holden Ford was given by the writer of the series (whose name escapes me but is from Adelaide) and in an article I read in the weekend papers was for the cars now no longer produced in Australia. It is a wonderful series, so well written and produced. A bit slow but as it is based on fact (apparently) I wouldn't expect much else. It is really something that was binge worthy!

I'm coming down from tech week and first performance weekend high so I decided to relax today and watch this. OH MY WORD!!! Can I just say i love it. LOVE. The story, teh music, the 70's clothes. I graduated from high school in in 1977 so I can relate to so much of it. And I'm a bit obbessed with sserial killers

The name Holden Ford was given by the writer of the series (whose name escapes me but is from Adelaide) and in an article I read in the weekend papers was for the cars now no longer produced in Australia. That was my point, he's named after two models of cars...that's why I thought it was stupid. The character is based on a real person with a normal name (John Douglas) not sure why they had to go with such an obviously cheesy name, just call him Jim or Frank if they didn't want to use John. For those who don't know this is based on fact, John Douglas and Robert Ressler were real FBI agents in the 1970s and they pretty much developed the concept of serial killer profiling. At the time they interviewed as many serial killers and violent sex offenders (rapists, paedophiles) as they could that were in currently in custody and tried to get an idea of how they think, why they do things etc in an attempt to better understand them, predict their actions and then help solve future crimes. They were the ones who coined much of the current terminology used such as serial killers, spree killers, signature etc. They also developed ways of interviewing suspects and then interrogating then when they were on trial. John Douglas has written quite a few books about his life and the cases he's worked on Mindhunter was the first, then Journey Into Darkness, there's also a book on stalkers (Obsession) and also historic cases where he goes back through the crime scenes and analyses them (The Cases That Haunt Us and Law & Disorder). He was very vocal about the Jon Benet Ramsay case and that the parents were not involved....which in part led to him leaving the FBI. Plus he has spoken out about Amanda Knox and also says she is innocent. His books are well worth reading if these topics fascinate you...plus I learned quite a few handy tips on how to protect my personal safety a bit better. In his books he also talks about how much of a toll this has taken on him physically and personally (relationship with his wife and kids etc)...I can't even imagine how you go home and try to live a normal life after being immersed in that sort of darkness all day at work, but thankfully there are people who are willing to do this sort of work to try to keep the rest of us a bit safer. I've only seen the first 4 episodes of the TV series so far, so unsure if it stays true to real life or if it veers off into "creative licence" territory, but these are definitely real people who revolutionized the handling of sexual homicide cases.

I've read there was a good bit of "creative licence" in the characters of Ford and Tench. The actor who plays Tench said the characters are not really meant to be exact reflections of Douglas and Ressler. They did want to show the impact such difficult work has on the men and their family/friends relationships. We see this is the last several episodes and I bet that will play a larger part in a second season.
Speaking of which, I also read that a second season is tentativley planned, but wouldn't air until 2019. That's a long wait!

We only started watching it last night - 3 episodes and then I just watched 2 tonight. We commented on the "Holden Ford" name- I work in the suburb where the Holden factory closed down just this past Friday. A real part of our community and a big deal for many of our families. How quirky to name a character after Holdens! Oh and I am loving the show- everything about it and yes I am know going to try and find some of the books to read. Corinne

I don't think most Americans will catch that. I, personally, had never heard of Holden cars. Granted, I am not a car person.

I read an article that the personal lives of the agents they took some creative license but the interviews with the criminals is almost verbatim in some instances. They very much stuck to the facts in that area.

I finished watching this tonight and it does stay very close to the first book in terms of the cases he worked on and the overall timeline of events, the 'extra' stuff in the TV show is all the girlfriend drama and the other characters, he mentions them, but the books don't really go into the details of their lives. All in all it was a pretty accurate portrayal of the main events in the book.
I can see this going for a few seasons as he had a long career with the FBI and worked on lots of high profile cases and this is really just the start of it all. I thought it was well done, and I'll watch more seasons in the future.

I have watched two episodes and as soon as I clean my floors I'm going to binge on the rest this afternoon. I liked the first episode. I love the dialog. So far I like that it is unfolding slowly. So glad there was a thread on it, otherwise I may have missed it.

I loved this show, I just finished it this week and really enjoyed every bit of it except the girlfriend. I did not like her at all, something about the expressions on her face all the time. I dont think she every looked really happy, just looked snooty and smug all the time. I thought he could do better, lol.
I really hope there is a second season.

I missed this the first time around. Started series a couple weeks ago and am loving it. I should finish watching it today. I love all sorts of true crime, web sleuths, criminal psychology and so forth. My husband couldn’t get past the first episode but I’m so glad I pushed on because it is an excellent series. I’m hoping there’s another season. I came here to find out, lol, vaguely remembering a thread about Netflix series being discussed recently.

The pacing is a bit slow but I mean that as a compliment. One reason I dislike watching the typical TV cop drama is because they rush to have everything wrapped up in an hour. I'm enjoying the more deliberate pacing of this show. Very much looking forward to the series. My daughter got me onto this show. I watched the first episode and thought it was sooooooo sloooooow but after the second episode I was totally hooked and binged the rest of the season. We are hanging out waiting for the second season to start. I love it! ETA: Aaargh, I just realised that this is an old thread!! But it took me until I saw a post by Compwalla to realise.

I started watching this series. I think I watched the first two, but I really struggled with it. I am interested in the subject matter, but knowing it was about real life killers, and that it was relatively recent history, I found the very graphic descriptions of what the murderer said he did to the victims really hard to listen to. I don’t think I have the stomach for it. If it hadn’t been quite so graphic, I probably would have really enjoyed it, but it maybe has to be that graphic to show the process of developing the profiling of these killers.
