I'm sitting in our house on Martha's Vineyard waiting for the power to go out. Currently winds up to 40 mph. Pouring rain. Storm will get much worse overnight. So why are the 4 wild turkeys that hang around the house sitting on the roof??? I'd never seen a turkey fly before today. Why are they doing this? For those other peas riding out this storm stay safe!

I know the answer! Its because turkeys can actually fly! They can go up to 55 mph for a short time span. No long distance flights for them! Its totally a myth that they can't fly. They actually roost in trees off the ground!
Stay safe!

Yes, they fly and are not so friendly!
It has been pouring rain all evening, supposed to get worse with the wind getting much worse!

Oh yes, they fly! My mom found that out when a turkey flew out of the woods as she was driving home and crashed into her windshield.

They fly, I've seen them fly up into my neighbor's tree and eat bugs out of the bark. Something about that particular tree attracts them.
But i have no idea why they're up there in 40mph winds!

Yes turkeys roost and they are incredible idiots. Our girl is is the most wonderful bird but really dumb as mud puddle which she likes to lay in when it rains!

They sleep in trees so I'm sure they are just trying to get as high up as they can.

Oh yeah — we have turkeys in tall trees all the time. As to why they are sitting on roof in a storm...well you know what they say about their brain size

Because your house looks like a stable place that won't flood or fall over in the storm. So they've chosen to roost there.
*Wild turkeys can fly but domestic Turkeys can't. They are too fat because of how they have been bred over the years, not to mention how much they are fed and not exercised.

I grew up next to a turkey farm, not a commercial one by a reasonably small family farm. Twice a year they paid me to pluck turkeys. 90% of them were dumb as posts and couldn’t even think of flying. But that 10% - watch out. Unlike commercial farmers those 10% were the ones my neighbor kept to breed. He said he’d rather have them a bit smarter. Lol

We have so many turkeys! Flocks of 30 wandering the back yard. When we had a swingset, they'd roost all along the top bar -- so very creepy. I've seen them fly plenty of times.
Nasty storm, wasn't it? Power is out all over the place.

My neighbor got a baby turkey a few years ago. He was the cutest thing. He would come over to our house every day and just look at us and turn his head sideways. I was in love with that thing. Something ended up happening to him (my neighbor lets all her animals run free). It made me so sad. I hope you and the turkeys made it through the storm without any damage!

They fly. We have wild turkeys in my area and once in a while they are on my suburban street. I know they aren't walking to get here.

I had that same thought too but the more I think about it, the more I remember that they were alive. I'm guessing he was right but they couldn't fly from the altitude they were dropped from. Hence, oh the humanity! Dang, is that show on anywhere now? I loved it.

So Mr. Carlson was right!!! LOL Don't know who Mr. Carlson was, but yeah! He's right! SaveSaveIt's from a wonderful episode of WKRP, a tv show in the 70s/80s. They decide to do a thanksgiving turkey giveaway, but they deliver the turkeys to the crowd by "releasing" them from an airplane. And, their reporter gives a live play by play over the air of the entire incident. Just thinking about it make me howl with laughter! You should totally check out the link.

yes - they can fly, but not very far or very high. I had a family of wild turkeys cross the highway in front of my car this morning. Several of them spread their wings and briefly flew across the road. Then they waddled off as a group.
