My 11 year old is growing up and boy everything is changing! We've got the skincare routine down okay but her hair, omg so oily! What the heck. I've never had that problem personally. We wash her hair every night, if we don't her scalp is one giant oil slick by the next afternoon. At first I swore she was using conditioner and skipping the shampoo, but nope, even when I wash it for her, its just oily hours later. And we aren't putting the conditioner on her scalp, I make sure of that. So many shampoo choices, anyone have this problem and found a shampoo that helps control it? She has long thin, silky hair. She has a lot of it, but it's not thick hair. And it's fairly straight if that matters. I'd prefer a drug store brand of shampoo, I'm not down with spending a fortune on hair products for an eleven year old. thanks peas!

Lush Shampoo bars work well for that. The Jumping Juniper is for oily hair. Part of the reason it is oily can be because the products you are using are irritating the scalp so the scalp produces oil as a protection. The more you shampoo the more you irritate it and the oilier it gets and of course the more you shampoo it. The other thing that I know works well and is affordable is the Aussie Cleanse and Mend. This one is about $7 at the drugstore for me to buy.

My youngest had the nastiest oily hair at that age. It’s hormonal. A vinegar rinse (1 part to 4 parts water) once a week helped a lot.

I've had super oily hair all my life, I used Suave clarifying shampoo every single day.
For many years, my problem was washing every day, a couple years ago, I spent a month getting by with dry shampoo & ponytails between washings and now I only have to wash my hair 2-3x a week. I still use the clarifying shampoo, but only 1x a week now.

Try a clay based shampoo, it's great for sapping up grease.

I've always had oily hair. I LOVE this Dessange clay shampoo. I've tried other clay shampoos and none work as well as this. It's pricier, but worth it. I can usually get by washing only 2x per week with this. Pam

I never had oily hair, but it seems like growing up there were shampoos for oily hair. My middle daughter's hair gets oily and I never found the perfect fix. I admit that that child does not wash her hair/shower nearly enough! But somewhere I read that clarifling shampoo helps.

This is what we used for our DD, and it worked great, and very reasonably priced.

My DD 11 has been like this for years! She also has pretty bad dandruff...she uses a dandruff shampoo now, but, before that we used a shampoo with Tea Tree Oil for her oily hair, and it seemed to help a lot.
Gosh, I wish I could get my DD to wash everyday! She fights like a banshee and I can only get her to wash about 3 times per week.
Good luck! Erin

Thank you everyone for all the recommends! I'm going to Target today and I'll pick up a few of these suggestions. I can't believe the oil slick that appears at the top of her head! Of course me, with my super human DOG NOSE can smell it and I swear I'm sure I think it's worse than it really is but dear Lord it gets so bad within hours! One of my Target boxes came with that Desange clay shampoo, and you know, that was before her oily hair problem was on my radar, so I can't remember if it was effective or not. I'm definitely going to try it again. I'm lucky in the DD isn't one to argue with me about showering, but I have sent her back in when I don't think she's done a good enough job on that hair of hers. She tried getting away with just wetting it a couple of times before she learned that lesson. You guys are the best, thank you!

My 17 year old had super oily hair. We found this Head and Shoulders product at Target. It's really helped. And, it's reasonably priced. We do notice a difference in his forehead acne if he skips using it and just uses DH's regular shampoo. It's like that scalp oil seeps down his forehead and makes him breakout or something. www.headandshoulders.com/en-us/shop-products/dandruff-shampoo/instant-oil-control-shampooThey make a separate shampoo and conditioner or a 2-in-1.

Neutrogena Anti Residue shampoo is my go to. It comes in a box so it can be hard to spot on the shelf if you aren't specifically looking for it. Also adding in a diluted apple cider vingear rinse can really help.
Does the shower she uses have a removable shower head on a hose? When I was around 11-12 I remember not being great about rinsing all of the product out of my hair so my dad put a hose style in and that really helps get all the junk out. Have her rinse for at least an additional minute longer than she thinks she should.

We used Aveda Scalp Benefits and it worked wonders on my dds hair at that age/stage. I'll just revive this thread with my small contribution. Me and my husband both have oily manes, it's especially problematic for me because I have to constantly maintain my "business look" as a reporter. DH doesn't because he's a car mechanic Though we both have tried various shampoos, most of them were okayish as hair cleanser, but H&S and Aveda were the best as a grease control. Hubby kept using H&S because it's "popular and manly brand" and I kept using Aveda's, it was 'Scalp Benefits' one. Later I came across this article where it was said that 'Aveda Pure Abundance' suits for oily hair too. I bought one bottle and can say it really does.

Combo of puberty hormones and as you strip the oil from your hair, the body works extra hard to add more oil. It's a hard cycle to break. I would make sure that she continues to condition her hair to keep it from getting to dry and starting all that oil production again. I use a sulfate free shampoo that doesn't strip my hair and I find it gets less oily on day two than when I use regular shampoo.
