Is he not aware that there were several attempts to reach a compromise that allowed some states to continue to own slaves? That these compromises didn't work? His comment "men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had them make their stand" sure sounds like Trump's "there were fine people" marching in Charlottesville. NYT John Kelly on the lack of ability to compromise led to the Civil War.I wish he'd been asked exactly what compromise he thinks would have worked to avoid the war?

The Trump touch strikes again. It diminishes everyone he touches.

What bothers me is that a man not raised in the South and who never witnessed Jim Crow could have such a stupid opinion of a war.
Lack of compromise seems to be the slogan of this administration. I wonder where it will take us?

Did you see Ta-Nehisi Coates on this?
Compromise after compromise after compromise. But as is typical w/some regressives, it's never enough "compromise" until it's "capitulation".
Here is the start of the thread.

How does one compromise about the ownership of another human? 🤔
This is so gross. I don’t even have words.

I wonder where it will take us? He might not have been raised in the south, but he was raised in (unofficially) segregated Boston. Someone linked this Lawrence O'Donnell's commentary in another thread after Kelly slammed Fredericka Wilson. Kelly raised in segregated Boston

Gen. Kelly Says Civil War Due to Lack of Compromise. Historians Dispute That.by ERIK ORTIZ White House Chief of Staff John Kelly's remarks that a "lack of an ability to compromise" is what led to the Civil War — failing to mention the deep divide caused by slavery — is being picked apart by some historians who say the former general needs to reconsider the facts."It shows the durability of certain mythologies and certain narratives that people don't want to give up," said David Blight, director of Yale University's Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition. "If you can say this and believe it, then you don't have to think about slavery." **************** Bernice King, the daughter of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr., later tweeted that Kelly was "irresponsible" to "make the fight to maintain slavery sound courageous." It’s irresponsible & dangerous, especially when white supremacists feel emboldened, to make fighting to maintain slavery sound courageous. t.co/qb2X7QhG7M — Be A King (@berniceking) October 31, 2017
Blight called it "profoundly dangerous" for Kelly to suggest people during the time of the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865, were loyal to their state over their country."Did all those millions of Northerners fight because they went with their state? No, they were trying to preserve the union. They were fighting for their country," Blight said. www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/gen-kelly-says-civil-war-due-lack-compromise-historians-dispute-n815986

It makes me insane when people pull this "uh, the Civil War wasn't about slavery" nonsense.
The guy has always been a hard right, arrogant prick. People were so fooled into thinking he was going to save us from this garbage fire because he occasionally looked chagrined when Trump spoke.

Even Greg Abbott, our odious governor, is in favor of removing the Confederate apologist plaque (also stating that the Civil War was not fought over slavery) from the Texas state capitol. But Trump's guys are on the side of the apologists.
