I've recently moved into a new place and have a decorating question.
My living room is right upon opening the door. I have a 96" long couch. It is comfortable as heck so its staying for now (I have been looking at smaller sectionals but for now the couch is it). I also have a matching loveseat that is going good bye; it's too much for the small living space. Currently, I have an 8x10 rug in the space. I like that size for the length of the couch. However, it's much too large for the width of the room. And also the stairs to the lower level cut into the living space right where the rug ends. From the front door, you have to walk over the entire length of the rug to get to the dining/kitchen.
Can I get away with a smaller rug, like 5x7? Even though it is smaller than the couch?
Don't ask for pics; it's a moving mess nightmare right now.

I have an L-shaped couch with an ottoman in the center, and I was going to get a rug just under the ottoman itself. A decorator friend told me the rug should extend to outside the perimeter of the couches.

How big is the room? There's a few rules of thumb, but most start with at least 18" of bare floor around the rug. If your rug doesn't have that, it's probably too big for your space. For living rooms, there's all feet on, front feet on and no feet on. Probably the most common, is a rug sized so that the front feed of the sofa/chairs/loveseat whatever furniture is all on the rug unifying the space. But some prefer to have a rug large enough to have all of the feet on the rug. A small accent rug can work - this is where none of the feet are on the rug - my caveat is it can look a bit old fashioned, so I'd be very careful to pick a rug that really adds something to the space. Here's a few guides that might help you visualize. www.wayfair.com/ideas-and-advice/area-rug-size-guide-S4828.htmlwww.redekers.com/support/pdf/rug-sizing-guide.pdf

It looked great in the last living room, but it's just not quite right here, dangit!

It shows a 5x7 just under the coffee table area, not underneath the sofas. I think I will borrow a 5x7" rug from my friend and just lay it there to see if I like the sizing.

Mine is just a tad smaller than my couch, and the furniture does not sit on it,just the coffee table, and it looks fine.

And nobody is asking where you bought an eight foot couch? It's the axiom set from Ashley furniture.

And nobody is asking where you bought an eight foot couch? My 8' couch is the Chesterfield Grand Sofa from Pottery Barn. And, truly, if you have room for it, it's fantastic having a couch that size!

I'm a fan of the "front feet only on the carpet" look. We also have an 8 foot couch (are these not common?) so an 11 x 13 rug works well for us. We had a smaller one, but I felt it looked skimpy. I got a reasonably priced rug from Overstock.com.
