Having it done sooner than planned to get in this calendar year for insurance. Right hemi-thyroidectomy due to 4cm non-malignant nodule that has grown to point of bugging me. Having done 10 days before a 10 day trip to Hawaii if that matters. A little concerned about that and being exposed to holiday travel germs and such. Anything special I should know about or be prepared for? Golf, zip-line, surfing are off the table (not that they ever really were on haha). I was looking at lightweight holiday print scarves on Amazon to cover when needed. Tell me your experience with pain, healing, side effects -- thanks!

I had my right and center removed in February, then three weeks later the left side removed because the pathology came back as papillary cancer. My right side was multi nodule and had grown to the size of a baseball. Made me clear my throat a lot and always felt like my shirt was too tight. The cancerous nodule was actually on the center part and was quite small. The first surgery was very easy. I had it on Friday and went to school Monday night. I really had no pain post surgery. Never took any of the pain meds they gave me. My only real complaint was sleeping. The first three days I had a drain tube and that was uncomfortable. I’m a side and stomach sleeper and it was a good month before I could sleep on my side. The only other after effect was I did get tired very easy and just felt sluggish. This was mostly from the shock to my system of no thyroid and it took about 6 months to get on the right dose. I would not have had the energy for a trip. Be prepared to be really worn out. Make time for rest and naps.
Good luck and hope all goes well.

I will warn my family! Kids are adults and no children so it can be relaxing as I want to make it. Regular trip to timeshare we do in lieu of gifts for christmas and birthdays (all our birthdays are around the holidays) so no pressure to sight-see and such. Thanks for sharing!

Oh keesha get one of those travel neck pillows. That first night or two it really helped with sleeping. Especially with the drain tube and bulb.

Hey sweetie. You will be pretty sore for a few days. I used a heating pad on my neck helped the stiffness. It will be difficult to get up from laying down. Go slow.
Thinking of you and hope all goes well.

I had a total thyroidectimy. Cancer was found on the right side, but I opted to remove the whole thing. Good thing, because pathology found cancer on the left side getting already to blow up.
I didn't have any pain and never took the pain meds. 2 days after surgery my husband and I went out if town to celebrate our anniversary (I was diagnosed with cancer on December 5, scheduled surgery for December 16. The 17th was our 20th anniversary, so we had scheduled a fun trip. We would lose money for cancelling that late, so we went). At any rate, was tired, but otherwise not uncomfortable.
