I'm not sure that these two articles really go together. Briana Brochu is an awful person and Michelle Obama is amazing.

I'm not sure that these two articles really go together. Briana Brochu is an awful person and Michelle Obama is amazing. Michelle Obama had an "unwelcoming" roommate experience as well. It's entirely possible that I've included the wrong link though First Lady spoke extensively about her Princeton roommate refusing to room with her because she was black. Edited to add: Her thesis was about race relations and being a black woman at Princeton but during the time the roommate story was trending it appears First Lady took the high road and declined to comment. I know I've seen an interview where she talks about it but it's proving hard to find. Donnelly sounds like she only got into Princeton based on who mom knew.

It's entirely possible that I've included the wrong link though First Lady spoke extensively about her Harvard roommate refusing to room with her because she was black. The article you linked is Michelle Obama talking about being the first in her family to go to college and it's meant to reassure young people who are the first to go to college in their family. She talks about how she was nervous to go there. Didn't think she was smart enough, brought the wrong size sheets. Nothing about her roommate. It was a nice article and I'm glad I read it. I do recall reading an article about how her first roommate only lived with her for a semester and then either moved into a different room or left college. SaveSave

The article I meant to post wasn't as feel good and provided a new detail for even me because I had not previously known the roommate was the daughter of a single mother. Which kinda makes her judgement of her black roommate even more mind boggling back in the 1980's. And not much progress it would seem. I'll encourage my child to attend an HBCU if they happen to still be around.

Did you read the story earlier this year about a group of high school kids from Erie, PA that went to Howard this summer and two of the girls wore MAGA hats, refused to take them off and couldn't believe people were so unwelcoming and ran to the press whining about it? And then later it turned out that the tour guide AND other kids on the trip told them to take off the hats and why but they refused and chose to play ignorant victims. Those are the kids who turn out like Briana Brochu. And we all know exactly the type of people who raise kids like that.

I read about them - They basically gave all those people the finger and then whined that people took offense to it. They are probably friends with the high school girls who posted f*ck n*ggrs on Instagram. BUT they are good girls, they aren't racist, three of them are cheerleaders. They have black friends! www.buzzfeed.com/briannasacks/high-school-students-disciplined-after-video-of-teen-girls?utm_term=.lfyEXk9AaN#.jyGMPYrNokETA: I mean one of the cheerleaders was sorry. She said on instagram "I'm back you bitches really tried to get me suspended from my high school? LMFAO I'm not a fucking racist. The person I'm closest to is black and have always loved them. Just thought I would set the record straight."

Nothing about her roommate. It was a nice article and I'm glad I read it. I do recall reading an article about how her first roommate only lived with her for a semester and then either moved into a different room or left college. SaveSaveThis is something I've always wondered about (for 53 years) My roommate in college did not like me. She didn't even stay a semester....came back from TG, she had moved to another room next door. We were Both WASP Texans from similiar backgrounds. I don't expect everyone to like me, but I was a much nicer person then than I am now and cannot think of a single reason she would dislike me. I don't remember how she acted after she moved...probably would if it were mean or different.

That girl is a hateful, vindictive racist. And not too bright to post it to social media either. Screen shots live forever.
I can't believe what we are seeing every day. I have to wonder what the increase in hate speech and similar incidents is since the election. Someone commented on Twitter, along with an article, that there have been almost or over 100 black face incidents this week alone? I wish I could find it again. What in the actual hell?

I can't even begin to imagine how horrible it was for the roommate to have to share a dorm room with such a hateful, vile person. One can only wonder what her parents are like. The internet will remember Briana Brochu forever.

Zora Neale Hurston said paraphrased...."oftentimes I am discriminated against, but it does not make me angry it merely astonishes me. How can anyone deny themselves the pleasure of my company." I wouldn't put a lot of thought into why your roommate moved out. I do wished the article I read shared what First Lady's racist roommate is up to now.

How awful for the roommate. I can'timagine living like that and then discovering what your roommate was doing to you, but then I would also hate it if my roommate was posting the private sleep videos of me as well.
Don't assume it is the parents fault. Often children are taught wrong, but many children are taught correctly and choose to go against those teachings.
I will always remember a group of kids talking about how bad my parents must be because of the things my brother was doing, not knowing we were siblings. Bad behavior of a child does not automatically mean bad parenting.

Yes, the increases are real. It's not that there are suddenly more people who feel and think this way, but rather now they feel emboldened to let their racist flags fly. SPLC tracks incidents and I saw a friend post on FB recently about a 95% increase in swastika vandalism on Jewish targets (I think that was just in NY).

I bet her parents will attempt to justify her behavior by saying the feud began with private sleeping videos which could explain why Brochu is who she is

I had absolutely no clue - we were friendly enough at work and I couldn't think of anything I had done to make her hate me. *shrug* In the end I figured it said more about her than me and moved on. You never know what's going on in people's heads!

I bet her parents will attempt to justify her behavior by saying the feud began with private sleeping videos which could explain why Brochu is who she is I used to always automatically assume parents were assholes who parented their kids wrong and while I certainly think that is true sometimes, I now see it with more nuance. At some point other influences can have a bigger impact than parental influence and it scares the shit out of me as a parent. I'm not a perfect parent, but I try my best to teach and model the right things for my daughter and I think overall she's a good kid. But sometimes she still makes dumb ass decisions (granted, nothing as abhorrent as this story, but stuff more typical of a nine year old - like throwing pillows into a moving ceiling fan with her cousin. She knows what the right decisions are, but doesn't always execute). And I think we all know good people who have shitty kids or kids that do shitty things or see new stories like that - I remember reading an article from the parents of a white supremacist and they were horrified, disappointed, spoke out against their son's beliefs, and distanced themselves from him. What this young woman did was absolutely horrible and I hope she suffers the full consequences. No idea what her parents are like or what their reaction is, but there is no justifying what she did.

I think there is a lot to suggest Briana Brochu had poor examples of what tolerance and human decency looks like. Value systems are passed down and that explains why black people continue to have the same experiences. Ruby Bridges, the one who intergrated schools in Little Rock, is 62. Her classmates spawned.

I wonder what kind of in depth studies have been done on formation of these types of beliefs - it would be interesting to see a comprehensive break down. Value systems are passed down, so that is certainly a big factor, but there are also people who don't subscribe to the same set of beliefs as their parents and are good people despite their upbringings.
