Or at least convince me that he'll be okay until the morning.
He had his wisdom teeth out just over a month ago. It was a smooth procedure, he didn't get dry sockets or anything but he did have swelling and pain for 2+ weeks. He's been fine the last couple weeks until yesterday when he mentioned that one of the extraction sites is sore again.
I met him for lunch mid-day and he said it was feeling worse so he agreed to call the oral surgeon. They told him to come in tomorrow morning. By the time he came home from work this evening, the whole side of his face had swollen again - he looks like like a chipmunk. So obviously there is some kind of infection going on. My concern is that is got so bad, so quickly. Do you think there is any risk to him waiting until morning to be seen and get antibiotics?

Sounds like an abscess. Call the oral surgeon. They might be able to call in a prescription for antibiotics tonight to tie him over until they see him tomorrow.

I would not wait. I'm sure you checked on this oral surgeon before the procedure, but I'd be sure it wasn't some fluke thing or something that could have been prevented by the doctor. That's just from personal experience with many people I know who ended up having terrible issues from the same doctor. I'd possibly find another doctor to check things.

Ugh, this is what I was afraid of. Of course he is blowing me off and saying there is nothing to worry about.

Ugh, this is what I was afraid of. Of course he is blowing me off and saying there is nothing to worry about. Nope. Pull your 'wife' card and demand he get seen. I don't usually get nervous about stuff like this, but you don't play around with infections in your head.

I never mess around with suspected infections. Especially in the mouth.
I don't think you are overreacting at all, if you took him to get help for it. Maybe an Urgent Care as opposed to an ER, if you have one near you?

Sounds like an abscess. Same thing happened to my dd when she had her wisdom teeth out this past summer. I am also an ER nurse/NP. it can wait until morning unless he is having difficulty breathing and/or swallowing. If you go to an ER, he may have to wait a while and will most likely have it numbed. An ER MD or NP may lance it but it depends on the facility and other factors. He would also get some antibiotics and pain med most likely.
*edit* Of course, I am not laying eyes on him but most of the time, a tooth abscess can wait until morning. My dd dropped by the ER when she had her issue and my doc said she could wait a few days to be seen for our regular appointment. yes, it was painful for her and very annoying but it wasn't an emergency. Urgent, yes. Emergent? no.

My Dad had this happen several months after having multiple teeth pulled and getting dentures. He didn’t go to the ER cause he’s stubborn. But my Mom did get him to go into his dentist. The dentist could see a piece of tooth shard just barely poking through his gums. He was able to pull that piece out and the abscess drained right behind it. He did put him on antibiotics. He was fine after that. He said the pain went away almost immeadiatley once he pulled that tooth shard out. Hope your guy listens and goes to get help!

Sounds like an infection.
I would ask him not to wait, and remind him that it is literally inches from his brain.

I agree that a possible infection that close to brain tissue is too risky. Will he be more apt to go if you remind him they will likely give him something for the pain?
