I came across this book as a teaching guide on Pinterest.
My son went to a church preschool and was taught that the hen was selfish not to share with the other farm animals. I was really not happy with that. And untaught that message.
What do you think? Was the hen selfish or not?

The hen was not selfish. I sometimes quote the book when I feel like my kids have been selfish and not helping me. Now The Giving Tree should never have been published.

The world is upside down !!

I vote not selfish because all of the other animals were seemingly able bodied and yet were completely unwilling to help her out every step of the way.

It's a little like The Ant and the Grasshopper fable. The ant does share in the end, because the consequences of not doing so would result in the grasshopper's death. The same can't be said of the Little Red Hen. It's her choice to share or not.

As a kindergarten teacher I'll say that's not how it's taught. I agree with self-sufficient.

Funny! I just read that book last week to a group of kindergarten children. When we talked about the story, the kids recognized her forgiveness and what they called "hard work," without prompting from me. Nope, not selfish
I cannot stand The Giving Tree. I find its message just disturbing.

Whoever said it teaches selfishness has NO idea of the point of the book. That person probably never read the entire story.
The point of the tale is NOT to be selfish and think only of yourself and what you want, and that one must share in the responsibilities (work) to reap the reward of the work. Hen was willing to share with those who had helped. No help = no reward.

As a kindergarten teacher I'll say that's not how it's taught. I agree with self-sufficient. That is what I thought. It could be taught several different ways. I think kids should hear the book and then talk about what they think. It can have a lot of different ideas behind it.

They didn't want to help. In the end she had the full reward of doing all the work.
