We are at DD's sports playoffs today, and they are selling stuff like always, lol. My son is in 3rd grade, and sees a shirt he loves that says "Staight outta the gym," in the style of Staight outta Compton. The words suit DS, but is the connotation inappropriate?

I wouldn't worry about it. Buy it if he likes it.

My ds has a shirt that says Straight Outta Cookies, with a picture of cookie monster. The words Straight Outta don't have any connotation, negative or otherwise. I think the gym shirt is cute. If it suits your ds, get it!

Totally fine. Our 6th grade shirt a few years ago said Straight Outta (our school name).

I guess to me it feels vaguely appropriation-ish, like "Straight Outta Compton" was a statement, it had something to say about the culture and history and experience of the people involved. It did that in a way that "straight outta the gym" doesn't, but it's not rude or racist or vulgar. So I wouldn't pick it for me, because it feels like it trivializes what really was a major cultural commentary at the time, but I wouldn't really notice it as being obnoxious or inappropriate the way some sports shirt slogans are just obnoxious.
In other words, eh, not really an issue.

My daughter and her friend performed a rap from their scripture class at school (she goes to a Catholic school) and made tee-shirts that said Straight Outta God's Word. I'm hoping that wasn't negative! I thought it was really cute.

It's fine.
Whole schools have those shirts here.
Like the entire class of kids and the teachers have shirts that say Straight Outta XXISD to wear on field trips.
My friend who is a principal wore a shirt that said Straight Outta Pencils to school on Friday.

My kids do pop warner cheer and football. Last year, it seemed like every single city in the league had a "straight outta" shirt. The best one I saw was "Straight outta money", and the words "cheer dad" directly below it. I think they are pretty commonplace.

I think it is one of those phrases that has been used so much that it has lost its connotation.

I saw a whole group of “straight outta” commercial use cutting files with a bunch of those sayings designed for iron-on vinyl on a website recently. I’m sure it’s totally fine when you see soccer moms with a coffee mug that says STRAIGHT OUTTA COFFEE on it!

Pick your battles. Now if it said "see you next Tuesday" my answer might be different.

I don't see how it could be considered inappropriate. It sound positive to me, working out, getting exercise. I would love it for my daughter who loves the gym!

<------- has no idea what straight outta compton means soooooo is totally missing any inappropriate connotation to any other straight outta ____ place/item.
eta: had to go google it. Even after that I don't see the inappropriateness. "Straight outta Compton" was used for the title of a rap album and movie because the "straight outta" was already colloquial English phrasing. Just because someone uses a common phrase for a movie title shouldn't mean it is never to be used again.

DS's senior class tee was to have featured the “Straight Outta” theme however it created a small controversy and it was nixed in favor of another theme. There were two opposing contingents: students who felt that it was wrong in that it was co-opting a culture that has nothing to do with our white upper middle class suburban HS and a smaller contingent (of parents) who weren’t down with the rap association.
DS isn’t a logo t-shirt wearer so he never intended to buy one.

DD plays ball hockey and at the tournament they have sweatshirts with decals you can get "melted" (<-totally wrong word) on.
i liked some and others less. DD got "don't let the ponytail fool you" which i thought was a kinda funny. there was another that said "i work mine to kick yours". i didn't like it so was happy she didn't like that one either.
nothing wrong to taking a moment to reflect. i voted "it's fine".
