Early August, I bought a faux leather album at Michael's for a scrapbook album for an anniversary gift. I think I paid 29.99. (I might have used a 20% entire purchase at the time, but still paid close to full price).
This weekend, I was just getting around to start putting it together. It is faux black leather. I went to remove the labels/price tags on the album and found that the "Recollections" brand album has a "sticky" banner label all the way around the front, spine and back of the album on the lower 1/4 of the book. It DOES NOT COME OFF easily and rips/tears and if one even gently pries under the tape label, it damages the faux leather, and leaves little "scuff marks". I was gentle and patient trying to remove the label, but was not able to get it all off.
This label is about 2inches wide, and at least 20inches long. and it is an "ALL sticky/tear off" type label on the faux leather. By the time I had removed a fair amount of the label, I was pretty steaming mad, and wanted to just pack it up and go steaming mad back to Michaels and return it and rant. (I had just come from there where I had purchased other items for the scrapbook, so did not want to go back).
I held back because I had torn off most of the label myself, but there is still residual that is really hard to get off, and even if I remove every speck, there is the scuff marks I created and I so I am not sure if I should even try take it back or not.
I pacified myself by think that I would buy a 2 inch ribbon and wrap it around the album, but part of me wants to return it because it should NOT BE THAT HARD to take off a label.....AND, I worry that over time, the ribbon will come unglued and it will show.
What does everyone think? Return it or just do the ribbon thing and live and learn before I EVER buy a Recollections album again....

Notify the manufacturer. Maybe they will send you a new one!
That would aggravate me too!

I would be pissed to. I had something similar on an album but it was a much smaller area and I was still not happy at all.

I would return it and demand a full refund. I HATE stickers on things!!! WHY is it necessary??
The Recollections chipboard or fabric D-ring binders do NOT have stickers on them. The branding strip/label wrapped around the album is paper. Just FYI in case you want to buy one of those, instead. They are all I buy now and I'm very happy with them.

I would return it and get something else. Since Recollections is Michael's in-house brand, Michael's should deal with the problem. If removing the label caused the material to scuff, that alone should be enough of a reason to take the thing back.
I can't stand companies that put stickers on stuff to begin with, but the companies that label their products with the really super cheap, super thin paper labels that are impossible to get off ARE. THE. WORST! I mean, really? If the label is meant to come off of the product, make it with material that stays together and stick it on with adhesive that is 100% removable already! It's ridiculous.

Personally, I'm done with Recollections. I tried to give the store brand a chance and ended up with a brand new 3x3 square punch that only punches one corner of the square. I can't take it back because I already threw away the receipt and the packaging.

I would return it.
Ross and Marshalls do the same thing. I bought a cute box to store my washi in and when I tried to peel up the price tag from the lid the sticky remained. I returned it and the clerk suggested I just put a sticker over it and I wouldn't even notice it. Um. No.

I agree. If you still have the receipt (although, if it's Recollections, you shouldn't need it - they're only sold a Michael's, right?) I would return it. That is unacceptable.

I'd return it. If you have some GOO GONE around the house, that will take off sticker residue. The Scrapbooker's Friend Adhesive Remover works too, but you might not be able to find that on short notice.
eta: And $29.99 is not cheap for an album in my opinion, so it seems to me that you paid for better quality than you got!

I would take it back to Michaels. If it were me it would be unhappy every time I saw the book so(to me), it wouldn't be worth keeping it.

I absolutely hate that kind of sticker. And I'm wondering if you can even use an adhesive remover on the album without ruining the finish. I bought several of their post bound items on sale. They didn't have the sticker but they were pretty poor quality. Take it back and get a WRMK album. Much nicer.

Oh, I feel your pain! I hate super sticky labels.
Target carries the WRMK albums for $19.99. The stickers come off very easily.

I suggest goo gone too. it's excellent for removing residual adhesive. lightly blow dry the area to warm (not heat) the sticky stuff so the goo gone is even easier and faster to use. because it's faux leather, you don't want to heat it or it will stretch. I think warming it will be fine though.

Definitely take it back.
I use the linen-look recollections brand albums and I really like them. They are holding up well. Everytime one goes on sale I get worried that they are going to discontinue them. I've been using them for my daughter's school albums and I'd like some consistency. She's only 6! I use one album for 2 years of school so I've got quite a long way to go.

I hate them so much, too. It's because people steal and cheat (taking off the tag and replacing it with another), but we need a better system for stopping that. It makes me crazy.

I took it back, including the tiny pieces of the ripped off label sticker....she gave me my money back. Did not even question it. I asked her if she thought that the others were like this and she said she presumed so, and if any others have complained about the sticker, of which she replied, "no, you are the first". I asked her to notify the manager, and she said she would....
I went in, loaded for bear, but did not need to use it, she did not even blink, and asked me for my receipt. I took my money, and drove over to Target and got the WRMK album and refill pages that someone mentioned above. Thanks Mikklynn, for the tip.

I've put items in some sunlight or used the hair dryer to warm up the adhesive before removing those extra sticky stickers.

I am glad Michaels came through for you. I hate stickers that stick too well!! Just like the sealed plastic packs that are next to impossible to open sometimes!! (At least with out physical injury!!) Too bad a few bad apples make it so hard for the rest of us I worked retail for years and people would try to re-label things them selves to get a deal. Thankfully the other 99% + of shoppers I found were honest and nice to serve.

I was a little taken aback by one of those recently too. I did get the sticker off, but I won't be buying them again for that reason. Glad you were able to return it!
